It's not much lower, 42-45% of first time marriages end in divorce, the rates go up, but the number of people doing it goes down for remarrying, i.e. 2nd and 3rd marriages are far more likely to fail. It's unclear whether this site's statistics include marriages with one partner being their 1st marriage as "first time marriages" or if both partners must be in order to qualify (which would be my definition)
At any rate, in my experience (32, been with my wife for 11 years, married for 8, 2 kids, house, household income over 120k) most people I see getting divorced:
1. Have a wife who wasn't a virgin when they met
2. Have parents or close friends/family who have gotten divorced (my parents have been together 43 years, her parents 38, our grandparents on all sides never divorced, etc)
3. Married someone with an unsettled major life issue (i.e. not sure if they wanted kids, not sure if they wanted to live in X location or Y location)
4. Have financial issues. The meme is that women will leave you if you make a lot of money. My wife isn't a gold digger, but one of my uncles married one, and if anything they stay more loyal once they're in their late 30s because they realize they don't have the looks to steal his money and still find something as good or better.
I think I'm a pretty good judge at this point of which marriages I see people getting themselves into will or won't last. It's usually pretty simple to tell when two people just won't fucking get along long term but it's also incredible to me the number of people who are IN relationships like that who are completely incapable of telling.

Because women are no longer bound by those historical female drawbacks/responsibilities. They're allowed to vote. They're allowed to work. They're allowed to do whatever they want in a relationship and a man can't say no.
