Just like seemingly “useless” theoretical particle physics was necessary to discover nuclear energy and weaponry, seemingly “useless” pure math comes to have unexpected applications to the real-world. You can’t know something will be totally useless without first researching it. Even imaginary numbers (which become negative numbers when multiplied by themselves) are necessary to use in some engineering problems. OP’s pic is pretty funny though, I’ll admit.
