My Mum was in ICU a few years back with sepsis. She was placed in an induced coma and on a ventilator. The problem is that drugs they have to give you affect your blood circulation. So extremities like fingers and toes don't get a good blood supply and get necrotic. I was with my Mum for 3-4 weeks and watched as toes went grey and then black.
