the Spanish don't get enough credit for their conquests, their native allies provided translation services and negotiating for food from village chieftains. but when it came to the combat engagements they did the bulk of the work. the natives were terrified of their steel blades, they had never felt anything that powerful before. they would run away from the swordsmen and shoot arrows and eventually get BTFO by artillery.
