murica has cars and public transport is seen as for poor people. When I was in the Army I was stationed in DC for a time, and visiting family in NYC. Depending on my bank account balance at the time I'd take the bus or the express train. The bus was always full of smelly niggers. The train was mostly whites, but you could get up and walk around, hit the diner car, etc, but it cost 10 times as much.
We have one of the highest car ownership rates in the entire world.

The DC-NYC train doesnt even save you that much time. I could make the same drive and it would take me maybe half an hour extra but cost me 1/5 the price.

You are referring to Amtrak? West coast inner and greater city trams and commuter rails are quite nice. Boston and NYC are pretty gross though. I'd much rather be on a train than a bus. Greyhound is gross.
Than why don't you use them? You will never convince me that getting on a train to visit my family 250 miles away is a better alternative than packing my family into our vehicle, and driving the 250 miles at our own convenience.

The people with money have cars and typically live outside the city where public transit does not go and for good reason. If you cannot afford a car you are more times than not dumb trash and no one wants to be around that.

We do use them but we like alcohol too and drunk driving is not ok and all towns at 5k+ population have a train connection here.
And driving to the next city in train is faster than driving with a car.
We invented a ride-sharing industry to solve this problem. You can be practically anywhere in the US and have a designated driver pick you up in approximately 5 minutes, driving you home for an affordable rate.

Public transport is much more expensive for the government to provide than just building roads, and requires heavy government subsidies to operate. The European solution has been to tax the crap out of the 70% to 80% who drive, to subsidize the 20% to 30% who take public transport. Here is a graph of the UK's transport share for example - more than 80% of Britbong travel is by car, yet if you look up their spending figures the British government spends more subsidizing trains/metro than they do on roads.
