While it's certainly a fact that the Rus (or Rusyni or Russkie or whatever they happened to be called before the term "Belarusian" came into usage) were a majority at certain points in the history of the GDL, they were always a distinct people. Lithuania was powerful, and with the threat of the Mongols, there were reasons for annexation back then. The Lithuanians had the central government, and the Rus were vassals.

If you want to know what the dominant culture was, remember that the Rus nobles became Polonized.

But during that whole history, there was a culture distinct from Lithuanians.

There were a lot of people who came here before the Revolution, and they primarily came from Belarus and the western part of Ukraine. They overwhelmingly called themselves "Russian" and did not buy into Ukrainian or Belarusian nationalism. A lot has changed since then.

Today, I think that people in Belarus don't realize how much the west is propagandizing them, and picking one side or the other. I sit here and watch the news and see the narratives that are spun. Flies in the face of what my ancestors and their friends experienced and believed. There are all of these NGOs in Belarus that are trying to manipulate their identity, and this alternative identity was invented by Lithuanians and Uniates.
