Assuming every single member of the US military was being utilized (and did not defect as well), even if only 5% of the US population took up arms against them, they'd be outnumbered 16 to 1. Sure, we were outnumbered in Vietnam and Afghanistan as well, and battles went poorly for the horde, but there's a pretty big difference between random goat herders with 40 year old AKs and well-educated white people with state of the art weaponry ranging from high quality semi-autos to .50 cal sniper rifles, to straight-up machine guns. Also, it really only takes a little piece of metal to turn the average AR into a machine gun, you think that wouldn't happen en masse in the event of some kind of civil war? Suddenly every Joe, Cletus, and Bubba with an AR or two has an 800 RPM rifle with a drum magazine and 10,000 rounds of ammo. A tank cannot watch a street corner. A jet cannot protect power supplies. A nuke cannot stop someone from burning food. You could make the argument that enough big booms will scare Cletus into giving up his guns, but these are the guys that have just been waiting for this kind of shit to happen, and they know their rural mountain towns like the inside of their sister's asshole. Hate em or love em, best case scenario for feds is trying and failing to dig them out, a more likely scenario is 150 rednecks in pickup trucks waving confederate flags, drinking moonshine, and absolutely demolishing the 45-man platoon who have no idea where the fuck they are.

If the United States starts drone striking, using chemical weapons, or fucking NUKING its own population, the revolutionaries have already won. A large majority of the military (probably 3/4) is extremely pro gun and a large portion of that crowd understands what the oath they took means and is willing to defect to defend it, and openly talk about doing so. The same goes for police officers, to a lesser degree. They're a bit desensitized to fighting their own neighbors, regardless of right or wrong. A US civil war would be a landslide government defeat because large scale military operations do not succeed against guerrillas (we proved this in Afghanistan and Viet Nam) and the people we would supposedly be fighting would be incredibly demoralized and a large portion would defect, with military equipment. Also, you know nothing about weapons if you think there's a such thing as "civilian body armor". My personal armor is BETTER than what the average combat arms guy gets issued. You're also a moron if you think there's an actual difference between a civilian AR-15 and a military M4. Full auto is rarely used, and a 3D printed drop in sear can convert an AR-15 to full auto. You can also manufacture your semiautomatic lower receiver into full auto with a youtube tutorial. If you're talking about machine guns like the 249, an auto sear, a few drum mags and an upper in the backpack is a close equivalent. This is the funniest part too, can we not defeat the military in a civil war or are the weapons too dangerous? It's one or the other. Dudes with rusted out AKs and sandals living in mountains kicked our ass for like a decade. Imagine a war in America, one of the wealthiest and most educated country on the planet, with a large police and veteran population, a sympathetic enemy, and an AR15 in every hand.
