There's a difference between a more phenomenological approach and a faith-based approach. Phenomenological evidence is still evidence.
Religion doesn't necessarily have to be faith-based. Paganism, some branches of Hinduism and Esoteric Christianity put emphasis on direct experience with the spiritual as well as contemplation/logical deduction (as you've mentioned).
