Great Britain and the Soviet Union went into the war with open cockpit biplanes still in active service. The US was able to transition to a semiautomatic battle rifle because they had actually developed one right before the war and had the production capacity to actually build them. A number of German infantry rifles were actually superior to the US M1, but were never produced in numbers that mattered.
