I have a strong feeling that a lot of people “did the math”, talked to their bosses, and were “laid off” purely for them to reap the enhanced unemployment benefits and the companies will snap a lot of them back up if the timing of things works out.
The gibs provided were unironically what caused the unemployment numbers to spike to that extreme level. Don’t get me wrong, things are bad, but it’s not as devastating as the unemployment claims indicate as long as people can start going to work in the next little while.

i can tell you first hand being an essential worker. we were not planned to close but just today they let 10 workers go and apparently its permanent. the account manager came down and told us how we are having orders cancelled from numerous other companies and that he doesnt see us staying open until the end of april. we were told on monday that they might be cutting our ours or shifting our workdays between other employees. we are needed and they are still trying to cut our hours, the ones beneath us a good chunk of them got axed.

according to the account manager, when these things happen the business basically starts from scratch, that it takes like 3 months worth of operation to collect money to pay their employees and just bills in general. we were given jobs today but with 3 other people who didn't have anything to do we finished all work within a few hours, we got the man power but just not enough work coming into keep it going,e ventually we are going to run out of fuel so to speak, like tomorrow if nothing comes im gonna probably leave and so will others.

It's only an extra 600 for those that were already making it. The maximum was $275 per week, because the government doesn't want you on unemployment in the first place. Right now, you aren't expected to find work and don't have to even apply for jobs. The government is being consistent with itself here: don't get infected, don't go outside and don't find work. $275 isn't enough and that's the point, it isn't supposed to be. This is a completely different scenario where the government risks getting smashed by all the people they just made borderline destitute- so the gibs are flowing. You can argue it's right or wrong but practically speaking, the government is operating under the guise of protecting(controlling) the people.

They only get the extra money if they were already making it, up to the maximum. A person making 400 per week is going to get 400 in unemployment, it only goes up by 600 for people earning that much pre-unemployment. In florida you'd have to be earning close to 900/week to get the maximum(275+600).
