Since protestants are textualists they read the old testament endorsing circumcision. The problem with that is that Jesus was against circumcision and the form of circumcision in the old testament was not as harsh as modern American/Jewish style circumcision. In the old testament, that style was removing just the very tip.

Modern American circumcision is only on the face religious, it is mostly the result of inter-generational trauma.
