i've always been a fear mongering prepper so take my view with a grain of salt.

with the way the economy is flinging and swinging there's no way the governments would be able to maintain anything for 6 months maximum before collapsing, nation after nation world wide.
Currencies will evaporate along with the workers who cannot be paid with paper anymore, along with medical staff that is getting infected by the bulk themselves (my uncle is a doctor, he says the hospitals are forcing every nurse and doctor to attend to matter what, including pregnant nurses, yet still face shortage in both staff and equipment)
And now that the USA is on the brink of collapse, they have no other choice but to do what they've always done in cases of crisis: raid a foreign region for their wealth (pic related from iraq), and there's no bigger or better target from every aspect than disease torn and gold hoarding China.
So expect a devastating war to take place between the two, which will spark even more wars especially in the middle east, Syria specifically.
And lets not forget about the civilian riots and anarchism that may start all around the world, but especially around those 100% dependent on the state and government to stay alive which seems like a huge majority of the western world, whether it's welfare leeches or homeless immigrants.

The best option for the individual would be to leave the city and start a farm, but i would say it's too late for this.
So the second best option is to stock up on years worth of long term food, minimum of 1 year, and a way to access water and purify it with passive methods (dont depend on electricity and water supplies as you will never know when it will be cut).
For self defense always go for long ranged weapons, guns are the top rank but not everyone has access to them leaving melee the only option, which then a spear would be prime for the job (can get one easily from a fishing store).
