it was never greek anymore than Greece is Italian because Rome had an empire. Only the Byzantine Empire was also the Roman empire and the Greeks merely inherited the remains of the Roman EMpire rather than build it themsleves. The Greece of today is in fact more than the Greeks had before. Macedonians and Thracians held most of the North. Although Greeks do have a claim on part of southern Albania which was Epirus. And some areas of Turkey like Smyrna.
