Only the Byzantine Empire was also the Roman empire and the Greeks merely inherited the remains of the Roman EMpire rather than build it themsleves. The Greece of today is in fact more than the Greeks had before. Macedonians and Thracians held most of the North. Although Greeks do have a claim on part of southern Albania which was Epirus. And some areas of Turkey like Smyrna.

Byzantine Empire never existed by such name. It was just a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire. Official language did switch to Greek later on.
