sadly enough, a lot of boomers think this right now and are refusing to follow the recommendations like isolating. My folks are only just starting to take it seriously now, I've been telling them since January they needed to end their fucking boomer vacation in Florida early, get back to their home, stock up on groceries and ride it out. Let me explain something to you about this virus:
In my country, Canada, with a very high rate of 13.5 intensive care beds per 100,000 people, we'll just give us a couple extra ones and round up to 14.
Now let's say we have a sudden outbreak of COVID19, affecting 1% of a city of 100,000 - which is 1000 people. Of these 1000 sick people current data from China says 3.5% of cases will become so severe the patient will need ICU, however current data from Italy is saying that 8% needs ICU and rising, and that number is even higher in Lombardy. But lets just say 3.5% need ICU just like China. 3.5% of an outbreak of 1% of a population of 100,000 is 35 people needing ICU.
As you can see, a small 1% outbreak of the most mild possible will result in 35 people requiring what is a total 14 ICU beds. If the number of severe cases rises to 10% like in Lombardy, the number needing ICU beds rises to 100… but we only have 14.
Also remember that not all of those 14 beds are empty, as the population is still getting sick and injured from all the other normal things of life. The total number of hospital beds in Canada is 252 per 100,000 people. The average occupancy rate is 91% (global average is 75%) - so at any given time there are 229 full and 23 empty hospital beds. As you can see, hospitals in Canada don’t even have enough beds of any kind even just for the severe cases of this small 1% outbreak.
Current Chinese data says patients in ICU will stay there up to a month. Current experts are estimating that 50-70% the population will get the virus. If 25% of Canada’s population gets it within a one month window at a 5% severe case rate that will mean 1250 life threatening cases fighting over 252 hospital beds and 14 ICU beds, which are already 91% occupied.
It doesn't take an expert to see that this is an apocalyptic tier scenario and why governments and experts are absolutely freaking the fuck out over it.
