A peasant was a "free" person, not to be confused with serfs who were indentured to the lands on which they lived. Peasants were free to roam freely, poor as fuck, and panhandle/beg/labor for their meager existence. They, by law, were not allowed to own lands, nor fruit bearing trees, or any other means of self preservation beyond their humble skills at laborious tasks. They needed to ask the Lord of the lands to marry. By law they were not able to marry below or far above their caste/ranking in society. In contrast, anyone from anywhere can come to America and become a millionaire. The only thing preventing anyone from this are their own intellectual shortcomings. We work a lot because we want a lot. We're too busy inventing/molding the world as we want it to take vacations 6 times a year. What is there to see that we haven't perverted with our own image?
