I think it's ironic, given how shallow Totoro as a film is. It really shows that Miyazaki has never been a father himself. That he prefered locking himself up in the cellar over raising his son. It's a such a superficial depiction of juvenile behavior, an autist could do a better job writing believable characters. We really is not in a position to criticise other people for their depiction of human emotion. Wind Rises is another example of melodramatic trash, utterly detached from real human interaction.

Incredibly true and based. The protagonist is more than likely a cookie-cutter, tip of the bell curve, Japanese young adult who for some reason gets every thots pussy wet within a five mile radius. The only difference is that the protagonist has some sort of fantasy power as a means of creating the loser otaku power fantasy. This is done for the purpose of selling their product to the otaku. The other characters are shallow archetypes and are only meant for the sole purpose of acting as clay for the protagonist to mold into something beneficial to him. These characters are plot devices, not people. This is all for the self-insert otaku power fantasy.
