The scale is kind of iffy. The carrier is massive because it has an entire town on it, which includes people who aren't students but Ooarai HS is never really shown to have more students attending than a regular highschool.
Calling the carrier a "school ship" is weird because it's more of a town than a school. Like if a city is just called a college because the college is in it.
