God, imagine being this wrong about something. Not only did oral hygiene exist but the diet of medieval people had significantly less refined sugars. People largely used scraping methods for plaque control, which without toothpaste is not a significant decline in quality than an early toothbrush anyway. Non Nobility in Europe had generally very good teeth. I remember looking at a mummified body of a poor man who had really excellent teeth compared to the other mummified bodies I saw.
Tooth loss was mainly tied to the richer diets that contained more refined carbohydrates and sugars.
