The answer is consistency. You can have story with magic and it can still be internally consistent. You can't do the same with robots. Any attempt to justify mecha is doomed to fail for exactly the reasons covered in my op.

I get that this is meant to be a negative, but you could also cut it as a positive in that it saves on manpower
Legitimate complaints are the high target profile and the fact that they would cost a gorillion dollars to manage, but so would any high-tech weapon with a huge tactical advantage
Fiction has never adhered strictly to absolute realism, artistic license has always been used to tell stories.
This is what i never get, some people are okay with kids flying, shooting fire and controlling time but mechas are way too unrealistic for them.
