That's exactly how world building should be done. It would be completely unnatural if the characters reacted with shock at something that's common knowledge, or explained it to someone like it was a big reveal that the sun would rise tomorrow.

I have no idea of the actual quality of the source material, but I do know that David Productions's adaptation was one of the worst anime I've ever seen. That probably helps keep the normalfags away.
