His motifs were clear and well defined as well justified, and whilst clashing with out ''good guys'' were merely a side of his own to take, you could feel both being right. That alone makes him stand out.
It helps half of the show almost focused on his gang.
How does the word antagonist fly over your heads so bad, it doesn't mean he's bad guy per say, go check definitions.
