At the time it was quite annoying because most had settled on the obvious: that whoever just liked Keima for who he was would win, but at the end of the arc that was Chihiro, whose heart was broken, so people flocked to like Tenri or whatever, the character who legitimately never would have won--Keima never even captured her heart.

I was reading it ongoing, but I wasn't following threads much, simply because it became impossible to discuss anything happening as one of groups favouring girl would you call you opposite shipper. I do remember shitstorm during bitchiro though.
About Tenri I recall her being only one (might be wrong here, perhaps Haqua noticed too, but left it alone?) who noticed when Keima was down and tried to cheer him up with some shitty trick. Other than that, she was too meek and barely existed. Then again it might be because she had letter and knew there will be no ending for her.

The thing about Tenri is that Keima genuinely never actually cared about her. Eventually appreciated her? Yes. But because he never captured her all she was was some girl who he needed to mind.

He says it himself when she's introduced: he and her aren't actual childhood friends. They have no connection. She's nothing to him. The other targets? He had to get to know them and encourage feelings and so on, and he liked all of them at least somewhat. Chihiro was the only one he didn't actually woo although he "captured" her though. Her arc was about him refusing to make her fall for him. Throughout the series they also had several moments that showed they got along better than you'd ordinarily think. Chihiro made sense, and was the right choice. The problems of TWGOK are basically "everything else about the final arc/ending"

How Elsie was dealt was what really pissed me off of TWGOK more than Chihiro winning. It's not even about wanting her to get Keima, I actually liked their relationship being unique from almost every other series that give the protagonist a partner in that neither of them actually was interested in each other.

But how Elsie's background teased and then after learning about it she's just "gone" now without really dealing on the fallout of it was lame. Not to mention she didn't get to do much of anything in the last arc.
