The anime isn't that good. You can clearly see that DP has passion for it but it's a heavily flawed adaptation of an already heavily flawed series.

It's good for the most part. It's got a loud fanbase, but who fucking gives a shit. Part 1 isn't amazing, but it gets better and if you're a shitter, you can skip it, each part is largely self-contained despite parts 1-6 making up a continuous timeline.
Part 2 is my favorite.
Read the manga, and read it in color.

I don't get Part 5 fans. I get liking it, but I just don't get how it's even close to being the best. It's just a worse Part 3
