Can we have a nostalgia thread about One Piece from back when it was good? Naruto and Bleach get them, so I think it's only fair we get one too. Everything before Dressrosa is permitted, although you probably want to avoid anything past the timeskip, since that's when most people agree it goes to shit.

Favorite character? Favorite arc? Favorite moment?

PS: Apologists of modern One Piece not allowed

Love that wallpaper

>Favorite character?
Zoro

>Favorite arc?
Enies Lobby barely edges it out, but it's a tough competition. Alabasta, Skypiea, Impel Down and Marineford all deserve mentions. Arlong Park was very good too and a good first burst. And Thriller Bark was fun too.

>Favorite moment?
Bellamy getting knocked out in one punch is the one that comes to mind

>PS: Apologists of modern One Piece not allowed
just call them cocksuckers, they know who they are

I was a pretty ardent Chopper guy

>Bellamy getting knocked out in one punch is the one that comes to mind
Based. Also in that very arc, Blackbeard telling Luffy dreams never die, or the big reveal of him being Blackbeard and those weirdos from Jaya being his crew, or Whitebeard's introduction, or Kuma and DoFlamingo's introduction. That was all like within 10 chapters. Jaya was so fucking good.

I don't see the appeal in Enies Lobby, to be honest
It was the precursor of everything that would later turn OP into the garbage it is now
Just fight fight fight, powerlevels, power-ups, etc

I consider Water 7 and Enies Lobby the same arc, since they're essentially halves of each other. Water 7 had the perfect set-up, drama and tension building, and the proper Enies Lobby stuff was the pay-off to all of that, with great fights and a great conclusion.

>verything before Dressrosa is permitted, although you probably want to avoid anything past the timeskip
It's commonly considered the worst arc, but I continue to believe Fishman Island has the best flashback in the series, even if the arc is really lacking in other departments.
>Favorite character?
Out of the main ones, Usopp hands down. He has the best fights and the best character arc (in W7). Funny thing is, I hated the shit out of him early on, but he really grew on me. OP is like that sometimes. Bon Clay in general probably though, he basically is One Piece in a nutshell.
>Favorite arc?
The war arc as a whole (Sabaody-Marineford). I was honenstly tired of the crew at this point, it's been 500 chapters after all, so having a team composed of former antagonists and some new additions was great. Also, they hype levels were at maximum and so were the feels. Out of the standard arcs, Alabasta probably. Its main flashback can't rival the best ones in the series, but that aside its the best Oda ever pulled off his formula, all of the crewmembers get to shine, the character that's suppsed to connect us to the conflict is well developed, and there are some hints and set ups for the bigger picture that do not overtake the plot; it has some flaws though, Pell's undeath being the biggest one.
>Favorite moment?
It's really hard to tell. There are too many ones I love, Brook's flashback, Franky's flashback, Chopper's flashback, Usopp vs. Luffy or Perona, Zoro taking Luffy's pain, Mr. Prince...

EL kinda drags though, it's more than 50 chapters, close to the length of Alabasta and Skypiea, longer than TB, and it's just non-stop fighting aside of the flashback. Doesn't help the fights are the most generic power up feast in the series. CP9 lose all of their competence seen in W7. The emotional pay offs work (Merry's death, Robin's flashback), but it really drowns in all this fightfaggotry.

>Usopp vs. Luffy
Thanks for reminding me of this. Holy shit, was that fight tremendous. And the anime surprisingly did it justice, too.

Looking back, it definitely feels like a foretelling of what would later happen in modern One Piece, but I honestly thought Oda struck a balance just right in Enies Lobby. The battles were wild enough that there was some unpredictability and shifting stakes, but no so unpredictable that it just felt like retarded padding getting in the way of the rest of the story.

Why is Skypiea so divisive?

It's the least relevant to the story of one piece but it's the arc that summarises one piece in a single arc. The people who just want more story progression find Skypiea tedious but it literally encapsulates the everything great about one piece so its kino in my books

I understand the frustration. You see all of that great world building at the end of Jaya and then you're forced into an adventure that honestly would barely lose anything if it was entirely self-contained.

It's so cozy, though.

One Piece needed those "break" arcs, though, where you just get an adventure in a new island and not everything is inter-connected to such a big extent. Thriller Bark was kino too.

It's true, but Skypiea is rather long for that. And it really drags in the middle i.e. somewhwere between SHs regrouping and the flashback when it's just everyone vs. everyone and nothing much seems to be happening until the numberse are weeded out. Kinda like Fake Karakura Town battle in Bleach. Also, while I myself am mostly manga-oriented and only watched some parts of OP in anime format, this effect was probably strenghtened in the anime as Skypiea is the moment where typical nonfiller episode stopped covering two chapters.

I gotta say my favorite character is robin, she feels like an actually relatable character for me. My favorite arc so far has been fishman island, the other arcs are fantastic Enies Lobby, Alabasta, Skypiea, Impel Down. Havent been bored watching it ive been binging it since last week Im on ep 579.

it's a post timeskip arc set before the timeskip
>was the longest arc back when it happened
>lots of literal whos (Conis, Gan Fall, Wiper, Laki, Aisa, Pagaya, McKinley)
>long ass flashback
>fights are clashes
>stupid looking villains
>most of it serves nothing to the big narrative
but at least it had good character interactions and had great sense of adventure, these 2 features got also lost after the timeskip

Oh, yeah, the anime went to shit with Skypiea, no doubt.

>>stupid looking villains
How fucking dare you. Also, I feel like this applies to all of One Piece, barring like Akainu or whatever.

>lots of literal whos
Gan Fall and Wiper are central to the narrative, they aren't literally whos.
>long ass flashback
There are many of similar length pre-TS.
>fights are clashes
They aren't clashes. Most have actual beginning, middle and the end. Short fights were a thing pre-TS too. It's really Alabasta, EL and TB who have multiple non-Luffy longer ones.
>stupid looking villains
They don't look more stupid than average pre-TS. If anything, they're blander than average.
>most of it serves nothing to the big narrative
That is true, but that's not a post-TS problem. If anything, TS has an opposite one where big narrative overtakes individual arcs, especially seen in Dressrosa.

Remember when Sanji was cool?

I remember theories about how Sanji would get into one last conflict with his family after Big Mom collapses because of hunger and risks actually starving to death. Damn, would make for much more satisfying ending.

>Gan Fall and Wiper are central to the narrative, they aren't literally whos.
and they are literal whos, which is a problem
>long ass flashback
it was the longest at the time
>They aren't clashes.
they were, except for the final ones, and even those were significantly shorter than other arcs
>Alabasta, EL and TB
literally all arcs that weren't ~20 chapters long and thus Skypiea deserved the same treatment
>they're blander than average.
bland isn't the opposite of stupid, they were stupid and bland.
>but that's not a post-TS problem
it is, tell me how gathering Yakuza and collecting weapons matter in the grand scheme of things. or maybe tell me how 75% of colosseum fighters matter in the big narrative
Oda wants to have his cake and eat it too, by including many irrelevant plot point and also making every arc important, which bloats new world arcs to no end

>zoomer
if anything, you dicksuckers are the younglings who do not know how OP was kino before and how the current story is shit comparatively

Why don't people love Thriller Bark?
I'm a sucker for the B-movie horror aesthetic that binds the whole arc together, and it's great seeing the Straw Hats adventure without an excess of useless side characters dragging them down. It's one of my favourite adventures, especially since it introduces Chad King Brook.

200566527
>literally crying over children’s coloring books
how embarrassing

It was only good in the first half.

>not enjoying the whole crew gangraping oars
It's less fun than the initial adventure and mystery, but still a unique set piece.

Why do people like EL? W7 surpasses it in every single aspect except for fights. For a fanbase who claims they hate fightfags, most OP readers on here seem to love the fights. For me, my favorite arc is sabaody archipelago, it's crazy how the supernova were basically created in like a week by Oda, since I think they all are interesting characters.

Those are the fightfags retard. holy shit you people are autistic as fuck.

Here's a question;
Which Strawhat had the worst changes since the Timeskip, and who got much better?

For me I'd have to say Sanji became much worse. His new hackneyed backstory was totally unnecessary, and he turned from a suave ladies man to a massive nosebleeding autist.

I think Nami might have gotten the best improvements; huge tits, long hair, and she stole a fucking Yonkou's pet and dominated it.

Franky, Sanji and chopper all became massively worse.
Robin is also worse.
Everybody else is the same or better, I'd say.

>Sanji
>a suave ladies man
These are the idiots pretending to be the onepiece oldfags

I said "less of". In his first appearance he's calmly flirting with ladies and offering them free wine, even though they're a little weirded out by him. Nowadays he'd just drool and bleed everywhere without speaking coherent words.

>better
Brook
>around the same
Luffy, Zoro, Nami
>worse
Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky

>using the first chapter sanji appeared in as an example
Face it you just have cringe head canon of what you want the character to be. He was always the perv gag character and it just took oda rubbing it in your autistic face for you to get it.
