Just watched this, what did you think of it Yas Forums?
I found it shallow, style over substance.
Serial Experiments Lain
Other urls found in this thread:
It was defnetely style over substance but it excelled at style and atmosphere though (which I think that was the author goal anyway).
I still didn't enjoy it though.
Are you new to anime and Yas Forums?
No, why do you say that?
>I found it shallow
>style over substance
Is all you can do spout lame buzzwords instead of making a proper critique of the series? Lain certainly has flaws, but for a single cour series it definitely exceeds many of its kind in terms of both content and originality.
i think i'm going to get youtube.com
>I'm not new
>btw I just watched lain for the first time
The style is the substance retard.
Its quite shallow and pedantic at times I agree.
Anime is decades old and there are hundreds of classic and "classic" stuff. Sure, in theory you should watch every anime available...
>Style over substance
Not at all, and I would know because style over substance annoys me to death (Madoka Rebellion being the worst offender). Everything that happens in Lain is there for a reason, stuff isn't there "just for symbolism" or whatever.
Honestly you might need to rewatch the show. Most people do.
>hundreds
the farther back and more classic they are the fewer there are. Lain's one of the few.
Boring. Badly paced. Stupid.
Shonenfag-tier post
I mean it's kind of a rule that you have to be 18 or older to post here, so obviously we're not expecting people to only watch kid shows
ok reddit.
So what I am supposed to learn or understand from the series? That people are more than their consciousness and like having a body? That people aren't just what other people think of them? Because that's the two main point I got and they aren't anything special.
>ok boomer XD
go back
>So what I am supposed to learn or understand from the series?
A good take on observer theory and how technology could be used in a universe where it applies. It's not about giving messages as much as it is about telling a good story honestly.
But if there's one message to be taken from it it would be that no matter how powerful one can become due to technology, they shouldn't develop a god complex over it.
Lain > NGE when it comes to best 90s shows.
You can always still today find good/enjoyable theories about this show.
The only thing I don't like is the alien, it just makes things more complicated.
The alien itself isn't relevant. It's an example of rumors breaking into reality due to the Wired merging with the material world. It's an application of observer theory, where humanity believing something to be real makes it real.
Magnificent fan-service, magnificent body.
People like different things, there's a lot of anime to watch, one person could watch a fuckton of SoL anime and don't even touch certain popular things.
New people could, back in the day you watched what you fucking got.
And you don't seem to understand...
>go back
says the guy saying boomer. Ok reddit you can stop acting retarded now
It’s the same thread every day. Just go away.
>Sure, in theory you should watch every anime available...
And in practice too.
It was good, but definitely overhyped in the time past its mayday. 98% of people watch this and read meaning into it that isn't there and have no idea that the trippy stuff is because the MC is literally mentally ill.
10/10
>overhyped
How?
>98% of people watch this and read meaning into it that isn't there
Yes, user, it's there.
>How?
Everyone one talks about it as le deep anime and it just isn't.
Made for anal.
The epitome of "babys first 2deep4me anime". That being said, I like the atmosphere and aesthetics of it.
>Yes, I subscribe to WIRED magazine how can you tell
also japs love obscure operating systems for some reason so Lain secured BeOS a real legacy. Other than that its just 90s alternative & rave shit deliciousness.
There wasn't nearly enough Lain nudity in the anime.
Totally
...
wtf happened here and also why did sister go insane
dont mind me just emerging a reality on top of yours
like i get she can do it but she was not even aware of her powers yet
>her powers
she's the process and the result
SEL is GOAT, it's very metaphorical and has a subtle story telling method, it's not for your spoon fed popcorn bubblegum anime watcher and requires you to think.
I don't remember the show very well. But for its supposed depth, I've never seen an exhaustive, analytical or thoughtful discussion about the show. Compared to Eva, where the meaning and nuances of even the shortest scenes have been debated back and forth for 20+ years, discussion on Lain begins and ends with something like "it's about the internet", "it's about humanity" or "it's esoteric".
Something else I've noticed in anime communities is that Lain fans are eager to let everyone know that they've seen Lain, but aren't necessarily eager to discuss it because they'll be exposed for not understanding it. I'm wholly convinced that either a) no English speakers understand Lain, or b) Lain is actually incoherent.
Not all about the 2deep4u metaphors but it kind of requires a rewatch to get the whole picture.
It's simple for 10 or so eps then gets gainax-y.
After watching it a single time I can confidently claim to fully understand Serial Experiments Lain and all 27 of its themes.
I thought it was very simplistic, but I understand not everyone is born with a genius 113 IQ like me.
If you think it's shallow, I would recommend researching some fan theories on it. If those fail convince you that it has hidden depth then it just ain't for you.
It unironically is though. Of course it's not the only one, but then it's less a matter of it being overhyped and more a matter of people needing to watch more anime. Same problem with Eva and Madoka.
>eva
>muh symbols
Lain's just a straightforward cyberpunk story told in a very vague complicated way. Details that don't make sense til later are sprinkled throughout the early eps where nobody can tell their weight.
>a) no English speakers understand Lain
Wrong, but it's true that most people probably don't get it
>b) Lain is actually incoherent
Definitely wrong
It's pretty good. I started on it recently and haven't actually finished it yet but I like it. It really captures the atmosphere of the late 90s-early 00s pretty well and the animation looks pretty good. It's a product of its time but what isn't, I guess.
The lack of dialogue is pretty interesting and not something a lot of anime try, not back then and not now. If you think it's shallow, could you suggest an anime that has more depth? I don't disagree entirely but the competition isn't exactly steep.
Like for Eva the depth lies in its themes. The notion of god, the observer effect, etc. It actually has some themes in common with Eva, like "artificial" evolution of humanity (because in the end, our actions are still part of the greater array of cause and effects our universe is made of, and as such would be considered "natural") and the possibility of connecting everyone (though obviously this one is handled differently between the two).
LAIN?
I still don't get why they broke the sister. Lain barely notices.
I didn't like it.
the sister saw the cloud-lain which indicates she's either got the high PSI (at that point) or more likely she lives at the convergence point where the wired reality is strongly breaking through i.e. where Lain manifested.
If you are not "most people" then please tell me what the 1998 anime Serial Experiments Lain stands for and how it delivers its message.
Yeah, if you consider how it brought together its themes of the internet and mass communication's effect on society and the individual in a techno-mystical collage, blending personal visions, desires, and paranoia with macro-level conspiracies and socio-historical transformations, that nonetheless retained its clear stylistic through-line and single-minded focus on the Lain character, I guess you could call that style over substance.
