Well I mean, one inherently must be better than the other. But basically it boils down to people saying the new one is better because it follows the manga and nit pick the original to justify it. Versus people saying the original is better because of the more serious nature, emotional twists and storytelling.

The ending didn't really bother me. The whole series was basically a tragedy. That they didn't really get a perfect happy ending fit.

Watching shit before your time is fashionable, hence all the "le wrong generation" shit you see from zoomers. In any case, if OP was around when the show originally aired he wouldn't have been 3 years off, placing it in entirely the wrong era of anime.
