Anima Yell and KoiAsu have the same problems: the characters are mostly copypastes, and they felt like writers wanting to check everything on the CGDCT cliche checklist.
With that said, Anima Yell is arguably better than KoiAsu since it actually tried to do something different in that tournaments became a major part of the story towards the end.

KoiAsu's main problem became evident to me when I watched the recap episode -the first 4-5 episodes serve to establish the characters but there's little buildup or any strong sense of direction to the point where most of the stuff could happen in any other random order. It's only when they visit the space museum that the plot thread about what the girls are going to choose in the future is really established (second half of ep 4) and gets consolidated with the mineral expo when Sakurai sort of voices her concerns to Mira (half of ep 5). Once the plot threads are properly attached to the girls and their characterization, the story gets rolling and the show finds its footing.
Mind that I don't dislike episodic series that only use the school year as a general refernce, but those are better when they're just comedy SoL. KoiAsu tried to walk a middle road that's significantly harder to pull off and sort of failed at it.
