There's a character named Cid, the mako and lifestream concept is lifted from ff7 under a different name, there are guns swords and airships used to fight fantastical creatures. I'm sure there's more direct references I'm not remembering.

>as far as association with the game, I was producing the film without having that in mind, but because Mr Sakaguchi is really the creator of Final Fantasy, and he is just so strongly associated with the game it just became a natural progression that this movie was named after it and became what it was, which is Final Fantasy the movie. Seriously? The guy who produced the video games since the first one was at the helm of this movie. it was his baby. He played it so close to his chest that its failure led to his leaving the company soon after, even with his pedigree.

Nah, it was this movie. the ghosts are orange, and if they touch you you die. I remember the guy lets them into the city for some reason and tons of people die.
