Were D&D really that essential to GoT continuing? Couldn't they have just said "hey we wanna go work on other shit but you guys go ahead", like Lynch did with Twin Peaks when he went to make Wild at Heart? There are plenty of screenwriters and directors in Hollywood who would have loved that job and we could have had ten, twelve, even fourteen actually good seasons like GRRM wanted.
