The archetype is pretty common, it's a quick way to form a harem cult without actually having an army of soldier at your command. All you have to do is convince women you hold answers, no matter how vague you are. To entice them you can use religion (including Christianity, Buddhism, Shintoism, pretty much whatever), you can use drugs or in Doc's case you can even use tigers (mixed with his flavor of spirituality).
Then the standard thing for cults is deprivation, you oscillate between partying and starving your members of the basics they'd need to escape. Make them utterly dependent on you for their supply of drugs or food. Make them free to leave but with nothing while the party rides on with you and the rest of the flock.
This scam has worked thousands of times just in America, and has existed for hundreds of years abroad. It's not that hard but you need to be a good scam artist to pull it off, not everyone is that kind of a salesman.
