Heroes go to the outermost circle of Hell, along with the virtuous pagans, where life continues and the fires do not reach. Villains go to an area of Hell corresponding with their sins. Some may go to Heaven or Purgatory if they hold an unknowing Baptism of Desire, and God extends the grace of the Church to them in their dying moment (probably what Tolkien intended for most heroes).

Mortals go beyond Eä to dwell with Eru and the Ainur who never entered into the world in what could be called heaven. Failing that they'd go into the void. I can think of quite a few famous Elves who would very badly want to but whose petitions Mandos doesn't just dismiss but refuses to hear at all. On the other end of the spectrum you've got people like Glorfindel and Finrod who probably entered the Halls by a revolving door and were allowed out directly.
