Has less to do with the characters themselves and more to do with it being a forced political agenda. Fans, especially of established franchises, just want what they expect with maybe a little new twist to keep it from being entirely old hat. And having a female lead when it's been traditionally male can be just that. You just don't need to shove the feminist narrative down people's throats at the same time.
Fans don't want a lecture on how the stories they know and love and their fandom have forever been perpetuating the patriarchy or whatever.
