Literally "no it's German and means 'die Bart die'".

Normally the German dub uses other languages/nationalities for jokes like these. For example, Uter speaks with a Swiss accent and the evil German homer double in the Prisoner parody episode is considered an Italian.

But this time they didn't, as it wouldn't work.

youtu.be/DgquwVbdZf4

Blue Hair Lawyer says "Stirb Bart Stirb" (Die Bart Die) and Bob replies with "Die Bart Die"

so exactly the same dialogue except it doesn't make sense because the tattoo doesn't say Stirb Bart Stirb, and Die Bart Die isn't even grammatically correct in German

I think the German version is funny because normally you watch TV knowing that what they're reading aloud (in German) isn't really what the text says, as it's in another language. It's unexpected that, suddenly, what they are reading is exactly what it says.

That's Ivar Combrinck for you. He even translated "Isotopes rules!" with "Isotopes board rules" (as both words are the same in German).

But truth to be told, it's very hard to translate that joke properly.

*board game rules

I once told a colleague that I don't watch the Simpsons in German because the translation is bad. He tells me he's never noticed anything, so we just sat down, turned on the TV, and watched whatever episode was on.
During one scene, Lisa was at a competition, maybe a spelling bee, and people in the audience were holding up motivational signs. A voice-over translated what the signs were saying in German.
The camera panned over to Bart with a shit-eating grin on his face, and his sign said, "I'm missing school". Voice-over translates, "Ich vermisse die Schule".
Really? You don't think that Bart might have meant that he is ABSENT from school due to the contest? Why would he smile if he "misses" school? Why would Bart Simpson EVER miss school in that sense? Do the translators think that Bart Simpson likes school?

It's almost as bad as Bojack Horseman's German translation. I can't say I watched more than 2 minutes of that. Sometimes I switched over to German to see how they translated certain things, and it was always completely butchered when it didn't need to be.

the worst offender is that fishsticks episode from south park which doesn't make sense in any other language

For me it's based

Literally every German Simpsons episode was like this.

Just watch the stupid Yas Forums Sneed gag in German here. They translated "Gucci sneaker" with "Gucci Schleicher", the literal translation for the word "sneaker" that doesn't exist in German.

Combrinck did not only fail in recognizing simple English phrases, he also didn't even put an effort. Otherwise no one would seriously shout "Isotope board rule games" during a football game.

*Or baseball game, whatever.

>normale Worte, aber ein Pferde Kerl

based German autist

The german dub doesn't claim the seeting is in germany so everyone still gets that written stuff is in english and it is their de facto language.
Also Bart means beard in german.

Always makes we wonder how they translate episodes like the australian episode in austria. Do they just rewrite all the jokes to make fun of america or canada instead of australia?

In germany theyre called fischstäbchen which is the literal translation of fishsticks so why wouldnt it make sense? Dunno about how other countries do this

Australia and austria are different countries

WARTE AUF NEN TÜRKEN DENN DEM HAU ICH EINE DRAUF
UND WENN ICH EINMAL DRAN BIN DANN TRET ICH AUCH NOCH REIN
IST DOCH NUR EIN TÜRKE, EIN ALTES DUMMES SCHWEIN

The joke is that fish sticks sounds like "fish dicks" and putting them in your mouth makes you a gay fish. Fischstäbchen doesn't sound like any colloquialism for male fish genitalia in German.

They generally had troubles with the word "rules". I swear, they translated that word differently every time it came up and it was never really accurate. "Lisa rules" - "Lisa gibt die Anweisungen"

The joke was "fish sticks" sounds like "fish dicks"

TÜRKE TÜRKE, WAS HAST DU NUR GETAN
TÜRKE TÜRKE, WARUM MACHEN DU MICH AN?!

Do you not understand the joke?

Fish stick could still be used as another word for dick its like you guys have no humor

t. Kanye

I thought the joke was that fish stick is just another word for penis
I didnt think it was supposed to be this close to the word dick
Why not just say fish dicks then? Might aswell make it super obvious
Fucking ameritards and their shitty toddler poopoo vagina humor

"stick" can always be made into a euphemism for dick, even literally translated. The joke is obviously much weaker though

Kanye in that episode didnt get the joke at all
Iam atleast getting the intent behind it
Fischstäbchen is funnier than le FISH DICK HAHA HE SAID DICK XD
Fucking 12 year olds

"HAHA HE SAID STICK WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT IS LONG WHICH MAKES ME THINK OF PENIS" is funnier to you?

I'm pretty sure that the dude who translated the script, who voiced Skinner in German, was an asshole. He was proud that he invented jokes where there were none before. A lot of Simpsons fans were happy when he died.
I think he worked for the same company which translated Terrence hill and Bud Spencer movies. They changed the plot for those movies for no particular reason.
There is one time where Krusty talks about 'killerpilze'. Some German band. Another time Homer demands that Bart stops cursing so much and Bart just says 'alright', completely destroying the joke.

>"Lisa gibt die Anweisungen"

One time, some people in an audience cheered some team on. They had this chant that you thought would rhyme, but it ended up not rhyming at all, which was the joke. You can guess what the German dub did.

Oof, that's worse.

I don’t see why this joke wouldn’t work in German. All it would take is Germans knowing that “die” means to to die in english

The Simpsons was notorious for the bad quality of the dub script (not the voices tho, at least until based Norbert Gastell passed on to a better life). It sometimes felt like the guy doing the script didn't know any english. Most idioms like that went completely over his head. Noone knows why he kept his job for so long, he probably had proof of network heads being pedos or something.
He died some years ago of brain cancer, and got his son to continue his work instead.
The dubbing industry has the worst nepotism of any audiovisual related work.

>HAHA HE SAID DICK XD
The joke is the play on words, not the word itself. Lose the play on words and its just a really uncreative dickjoke. Is that easy enough to understand for you?

all me

No the Australian episode is very beloved in Australia.
>t. australian
And NOT austrian you dumb fucking seppo cuntfuck

The joke in the episode isnt the joke itself but the fact that kanye doesnt get it you fucking retard

LISA HERRSCHT

Ich bin die Eidechsenkönigin!

I'm so glad Belgium never dubbed shows (except animation like spongebob).
The French are the worst at this. I just can't imagine enjoying Friends in French

It doesn't really work because its incorrect grammar. This doesn't matter to US audiences because they dont speak german, but in german it kills the joke

Lisa regelts.

youtu.be/qQ0rqPf9LKs
They didn't bother to chop up the audio.
>just record it one take and pretend that you're words are being edited together
What's a kös? It's nothing.
>how would you translate it so that you have word fragments to make Homer look bad?
Not my problem, your job is dubbing tv shows and movies, figure it out. Germany's dubbing industry makes enough money so that those fags can earn a pretty penny. They put no effort into it

Can you explain it again but using drawings this time

So wait am i getting this right? Iam a gay fish because i like fishsticks?

The Australian ep is one of the best eps ever. So many classic moments.
>Bart calling southern hemisphere
>"TEHBIAS!"
>aussie prime minister
>toilet flushing machine moving homer to tears
>australia gags in general

Okay, so you arbitrarily decided that there can only be one "joke" across an episode, and any other joke that isn't really "the joke in the episode" can be as badly translated or nonsensical as it wants to be, since it doesn't count.

that's incorrect. 'the bart the' doesn't work in english either, and by extension the audience knows it wouldn't work in german like that. it being incorrect is a major part of the joke

>not the voices tho
True. Krusty is perfect in German

So, Lisa regelt? You realize that it doesn't make a lick of sense, right?

Embarrassing response. Just say thank you next time.

>didn't get a dumb joke

It's not anyone's fault but yours that jokes have to be explained to you. Try increasing your intelligence so you can understand the deep and nuanced joke that is 'fish dicks'

Tell me your script right now how they would talk about how 'die' is English for 'stirb' and how everybody is supposed to get it, because it's just complete gibberish.

XY rules doesn't mean you wield govermental authority as regieren implies.
It's more like "Lisa sagt wo's langgeht." Oder "Lisa ist der Boss"

So wait wait wait... Iam a gay fish? Because i like fish sticks? How does that make me a gay fish exactly? Lots of people love fishsticks!

Original Homer is awesome as well. Different from the original, but amazing in his own way.

Why are Germans so bad at trolling? Trolling is supposed to make you look stupid, and if someone else gets angry over it it's basically their own fault. That's the funny part. You're insulting people and "pretending" to be an asshole by being an actual asshole. It's not successful trolling and you're missing the entire point.

Ich bin ein Berliner

Of course it does. regeln would even be a wordplay in german, as R/regel(n) means both rules and manages in german.

>every time a minor character has an episode dedicated to him the German dub fags change that character's voice actor for that episode and change it back when he's in the background again

Yep, haha. i was looking for the right verb but i don't know the grammar. my german is not so good. in english the root of the phrase is, i believe, to rule like a king

They lost both world wars user, their fighting spirit has been beaten out of their culture. Nation of quitters.

Holy fuck i cannot actually believe iam unironivly arguing with people about the fucking fish sticks joke in south park

Like isnt there anything better going on in your city? Fish sticks is funnier than fish dicks and i dont care what you fags think of it
Dick allegory is funnier than just using a word that almost sounds like dick 13 year olds find this shit funny

Stop embarrassing yourself. It doesn't work in the slightest

German humour is no laughin matter

I'm just gonna continue laughing at your mental retardation, Kevin.

Americans are unironicly more dumber than germans and your humor is shit
Drachenlord>c

t. Kanye

And iam gonna continue eating fishsticks no matter how many times you guys will call me gay fish for it

>The episode received a mixed reception in Australia, with some Australian fans saying the episode was a mockery of their country. Shortly after it had aired, the Simpsons staff received over 100 letters from Australians who were insulted by the episode.[6]
>The Simpsons writer and producer Mike Reiss claimed that this episode is Australia's least favorite
>He claimed that they were "condemned in the Australian Parliament after the episode had aired".[20]
>The Newcastle Herald's James Joyce said he was shocked when he first saw the episode: "Who are the Americans trying to kid here? I agree Australia has its faults, as does any other country. But laughing in our face about it, then mocking our heritage was definitely not called for. It embarrassed and degraded our country as well as making us look like total idiots".[13]
why do you lie, auspussy?

Attached: 1562153592763.jpg (1178x711, 196.84K)

Yes, these would be good translations that capture both the colloquial meaning of "rules" and the connotations that have to do with actual "ruling".
However, you don't really need those connotations. People say something "rules" about pretty much anything. Even objects. "Oh yeah, this movie totally rules!". There is no idea that the movie is, even metaphorically, in charge of anything. It just means the movie's awesome. In Lisa's case, you could also just say "Lisa ist die Beste" or "Lisa ist super" or something.

Elaborate?

Germans aren't known for their comedic prowess

DUDE SHUT UP IAM A MUSICAL GENUIS I MADE BETTER STRONGER AND FASTER FUCK YOU YOURE THE GAY FISH

>and your humor is shit
but i am German too

yeah i can imagine there's no real translation, i wasn't disagreeing with you there. just thought, as an english speaker, it was interesting to point out that the joke in english actually has a tacit implication that 'die bart die' doesn't work grammatically in german, because 'the bart the' is a nonsense phrase in english. that's why it's a such good joke

I'm german, and yes, Lisa regelt would mean Lisa manages/organizes (something to that effect-like a police man who manages traffic "den Verkehr regelt"), and Regeln is the german word for rules (as in the rules in a game). It's IMHO the best translation of the title and meaning of the original title as it uses a word a german would notice the two implied meanings of that are pretty much the same two meanings the english titel has. It's literally the best translation of the wordplay you can get in german.

>american joke

This thread is literally all germans arguing with eachother in english

ah but in English ruling means to have similar to kingly authority. otherwise the word would be 'leads'. your boss, in the work sense, doesn't 'rule' you
