The history of Avigan:
エボラ出血熱に効果があるといわれる薬アビガン錠を作った富山大学教授白木公康にインタビュー。インフルエンザの薬として作られたアビガン錠は最初に「どの範囲のウイルスに効果があるのか」が試験された。ウイルスは大きく分けてDNAウイルスとRNAウイルスに分けることができ、アビガン錠はインフルエンザやエボラ出血熱が属するRNAウイルスほとんどに効くことがわかった。
2014年8月、猛威を振るうエボラ出血熱にWHOが「エボラ出血熱に未承認薬を使うことは倫理に反しない」と異例の発表をした。これ受け使用された薬の一つがアビガン。スペイン人やノルウェー人患者がこれにより回復した。
1993年、富山化学工業は白木公康の監修のもとウイルス感染治療薬の開発を開始する。そして1997年に方向転換をし、インフルエンザなどの治療薬の開発を始めた。この当時、手作業で週に約600化合物を試験し、ウイルスに効果のあるものを探したという。そして1998年、アビガンのもととなる化合物を発見した。当時を振り返り、白木公康は「 これまでの考え方に全くない新しい化合物だってのでこれが効くのならば素晴らしい結果が出るだろうと判断した」と語った。そして2000年に学会でインフルエンザの薬として発表されたが、前年に発表されたタミフルによってアビガンは注目されることはなかった。そして2002年にアビガンの開発は中止された。
2004年、鳥インフルエンザが流行し、2006年にユタ州立大学がアビガンが鳥インフルエンザに効果があると発表。これによりアビガンの研究が再開された。採算を無視し、使命感のみで開発を続け、富山化学工業は赤字となり、2008年富士フィルムHDの子会社となった。これにより開発が加速し、2014年3月にアビガンは抗インフルエンザ薬として承認された。そして2014年9月に流行したエボラ出血熱が流行し、WHOの発表後アビガンの投与が始まった。2014年12月にはアビガンの投与によりエボラ出血熱患者の死亡率が半分に下がったと発表された。
白木はアビガンの開発について「とくに時間がかかっている薬」「情報漏洩には気を使った」「ウイルスのご飯になる部分に似せて作ってあり、ウイルスが間違えて取り込む」「と話した。

>そこで米軍は考えた。インフルエンザウイルスは、RNAウイルス(遺伝物質としてDNAではなくRNAを持つウイルス)である。もし、アビガンがインフルエンザ治療薬として、ひとまずFDAに承認されれば、適応外(承認された疾患・用法以外)であっても、エボラ出血熱やラッサ熱などの致死性のRNAウイルス感染症に用いることができる、と考えたのだった。米国防総省はアビガンの開発を後押しし、2012年には約1億4000万ドルを富山化学に助成した。
