Obviously there's nothing morally wrong with calling yourself straight or gay. But it's like being proud over your country, the local variant of the religion you were born into or the color of your shirt: it's an identity that comes from the outside and that only has value in relation to others. It doesn't help you grow as a person. It's only for show, a matter of social status.
That most of these people don't see it this way doesn't mean it wasn't true. A non-sheep person would construct their own self-identity that wasn't reliant on others.
