Certain parts are pretty dangerous right now, especially those that are disputed by more than one cartel. I've talked to plenty of Mexicans in my city who have told me that they really want to go back to visit home, but they're waiting because of how dangerous it is right now.

Larger cities are places to get robbed, but that's nothing new. I think he meant violence-wise. I do remember someone in TJ telling me, however, that it's very important to make sure you don't get hit by a car, because the driver will out you down to avoid paying your medical bills.

It depends. It also depends WHO you are. Puerto Peñasco (beach resort town in northern Mexico, popular with Americans from Arizona) had dozens of murders last year, but it was very quiet. Tourists didn't really notice, and many of the murders were only discovered months later, when mass-graves were located.

Not that user, but I was in Puerto Vallarta a little over a year ago, and there were military trucks patrolling constantly. I think that definitely helps reduce the danger to tourists. I was there for a wedding (my cousin married a girl from a town in Jalisco), and the entire town was full of military for the entire week of the wedding, though the locals told me that they weren't there before and had arrived simply because Americans were there. Also, as others have said, it's not so profitable to kill tourists, the cartels are more about control of territory. Like I said in a previous post, the dangerous areas are those disputed by cartels, simple because it's possible to get caught up in it.
