Aside from literally being his mom, Shinji is Rei's choice, not the other way around. She chooses him over Gendo at the end because he showed her genuine compassion.
Asuka and Shinji's relationship is far more complex imo. Although to be srs for a second I think either one actually getting with Shinji in a romantic way would have been shit writing

I think Char from Gundam is a pretty good example in Gundam UC. He is charismatic and pretends to be doing it for the world (and here spacenoids) but truthfully he is just a broken man pretending to fight for ideals he once held. He doesn't have anything anymore in his life.
