It's just another way people want to feel special and/or part of a group, but also stand against the increasing homogenization of the US and what they see as a "dilution" of southern culture. I seriously doubt any of them have some deep opinions on the economics of cotton and slavery. It's all very surface level.

And there are certainly many Confederate victories, for most of the war actually, and many great Confederate commanders, like Lee or Stonewall. Even academics in American agree that confederates "fought the good fight" so to speak, and were worthy, albeit wrong, opponents
Then, the Civil War soldiers started dying of old age around the start of WW1, when America was emerging a world power, and becoming super patriotic during WW1. So many sons and grandsons of the confederate soldiers wanted to honor their memory by making statues and monuments
Then around the 1960s and 1970s, the Confederate Flag became a symbol for general rebellion and edginess, not necessarily tied to the Civil war
Combine all 5 and you basically get what it is today
