>the best CGI animated movie came out in 2004
How come no one managed to surpass it in these last 16 years, is anyone even trying?

1 was better, by far. This was a decent sequel, but it was lacking the heart and sincerity of the first one. Shrek became boring as a married guy, Fiona was nothing more than a prize to be won that spend the whole film in her parents' castle, Donkey is more annoying, etc. Also, the movie relies on dated pop culture references too much for its own good. It's still fun, but in the same shallow and empty way the Deadpool movies are fun
Look user I love 2 just as much as the next guy, but honestly Shrek 1 was better than it.
no, 2 is better
At the end of the day, the film's main problem is that it never justifies its existence. It was only made for the money. Heck, the film ends implying that there is going to be a sequel, since Shrek and Fiona never go back to the swamp at the end. We all know how that turned out...
Nuh-uh, my mom says that Shrek 1 is better and she could beat up your mom.
Spiderverse. Also 1 is better
Shrek, on its own, is a great film
But the cultural impact (not counting the memes, although they probably contributed to the Shrek franchise stretching as long as it has) has been fucking awful. Shrek started so many cancerous trends for animated movies and shows (which probably won't let up for decades to come) that I'd rather Shrek never existed in the first place
Yeah. So many CGI animated films tried to follow its footsteps. Shark Tale was the first one, Robots followed shortly after, and so on...
First film is one of the best CGI animated films ever imo. 2 is just decent, but hardly neccesary. The thing about 1 is that it knows when to stop with the fairy tale spoof and start trying to be more sincere and emotional. 2 doesn't do this, opting to be a joke machine from start to finish, so it gets rather tedious
That's my sentiment too. Fucking great movie but watching it today you can feel the seeds of all the awful modern shit getting planted. I don't wish that it had never existed though, I wish that it'd just remained an anomaly rather than becoming the new trend-setter.
This, Yas Forums just has shit taste
Robots was kino tho
Oh, definitely. For it's time it was a great antidote to the Disney renaissance and its numerous imitators but so many people tried to copy the Shrek formula (irreverent tone and frequent pop culture references) that what was originally something unique and funny quickly became bog-standard
And so was Shark Tale imo. I feel like Chicken Little was the first example of the Shrek formula done badly, and it wouldn't be the last
>Shrek formula
I imagine the sequel is also to blame for this, since it became the highest grossing animated film ever at the time. No wonder other studios started to replicate the formula, especially since 2D theatrical animation was no longer profitable.
OOOONE LITTLE SLIP
Shrek formula basically means : lost of celebrity voices, postmodern humor, pop culture references, plenty of winks to the adult in the theater, contemporary soundtrack and, if possible, a dance party ending.
For my money, Shark Tale, Robots and Monsters vs Aliens were the best Shrek copies, despite not being nearly as good. If you want to see some truly bad copies, then watch stuff like Chicken Little, Igor, Planet 51 or, lord forbid it, Doogal
Which film do you think it was the start of the formula wearing thin ?
Shrek should've been a stand alone movie, just like Kung Fu Panda. None of the sequels were neccesary, since the novelty of the concepts were lost and the writing was weaker
Calling Robots a Shrek copy is disrespecting the kino that is Robots.
It was a kino film, but it was still a Shrek clone. Plenty of pop culture references, some toilet humor, celebrities like Ewan Mcgregor, Halle Berry and Robin Williams, early 2000s soundtrack and dance party ending. I did like it more than Shrek 2 tho, far more hearfelt
I feel like Shark Tale is the perfect example of how something having soul doesn't necessarily mean it's objectively good, as scary as that adverb modifying 'good' is around Yas Forums
I keep saying they need to remake Shrek
Not a new adaptation or anything stupid, just redo the movie with new CGI
because yikes the CGI aged like butter
It's a very love or hate kind of film. It does ooze soul and personality, despite not being very heartfelt. I do think it's a lot cuter than Shrek 2
One was wayyyyy better then this pile of poo
Anything that came out after 2004 is SHIT.
Prove me wrong.
*ahem*
1 is a timeless classic, other than the Matrix joke. 2 is stuck in 2004. What are your reasons for thinking 2 was bad ?
2005, 2006 and 2007 were a dark age for CGI animated films imo. Very few films worth mentioning from that era.
