If the Question and Mr. A are supposed to be objectivist superheroes written by objectivist Steve Ditko...

If the Question and Mr. A are supposed to be objectivist superheroes written by objectivist Steve Ditko, how come they risked their lives and fought crime and saved the lives of innocents even though they didn't receive any personal benefit for doing so? Selfless charity has no place in Ayn Rand's philosophy. The only real objectvist thing about their vigilantism is that they wouldn't risk their lives to save someone "evil", but really that just makes them slightly tamer than the Punisher.

I guess Ditko diluted Rand's dogma because he was trying to sell superhuman comics?

But Ditko kept self-publishing Mr. A for decades even though he clearly didn't care if it sold or not.

>even though he clearly didn't care if it sold or not.
Which also kind of goes against Ayn Rand's principles.

Maybe you just don’t understand objectivism/Ayn Rand’s philosophy? I mean, if this objectivist just did what he loved rather than worked for profit, and that was writing stories about objectivist superheroes who risk their lives for no reward, maybe you’re the one who doesn’t get objectivism

Wouldn't Bruce Wayne have done more good if he focused more on fixing the economics and politics of Gotham instead of running around beating-up criminals in complete disregard of the law as Batman? Restricting himself to only trying to fix the source of all the crime might work, but wouldn't be satisfying.

There's a lot more to Ayn Rand's philosophy than pursuit of money.

He didn't necessarily want to make a better world, he wanted to punish crooks for the death of his parents. Cleaning up Gotham was secondary.

Objectivism is a bit like a Scientology that failed to catch on.

My point exactly. Mr. A and Question's are as selfish as Batman in the same sense.

The two have nothing in common, I don't see your point.

Ditko was not an objectivist, he followed his own philosophy that was partially BASED on objectivism. A core part of that philosophy was that man should actively fight against evil. He viewed the policeman as the ideal man should strive towards and wished he had chosen that path in life himself.

A more accurate comparison would be with the Church of Satan. It's according to the founder Anton LaVey it's literally just Objectivism with added ceremonies, rituals and other stupid but ultimately harmless spoopy shit /x/ loves.

Most people hate on them due to the same lazy knee-jerk reactions. With Satanism it's because "Satan" is literally right in the name, and with Objectivism it's Ayn Rand's ESL use of the word "selfish".

I wonder what Spider-Man and Doctor Strange would have been like if they had been created after Ditko went full Ayn Rand.

Largely in the vein of post-issue 20 ASM.
Which was the better part of Ditko's run anyway. The Goblin/Crime Master story is one of my all time favorite Spidey stories.

I think he would have refused to do Dr Strange. His later art showed intelligent people relying on LOGIC and REASON and KNOWLEDGE with no room for mysticism. I bet he would have a clear-headed hero expose Dr Strange as a fraud and a charlatan.

"With great power comes no responsibility other than to live for oneself".

I hate Objectivism because of its more visible proponents... like Senator Rand Paul, who has been aching to take Medicare and Social Security away from old people since his college days.

"I'm rich, screw everybody else."

Stan Lee would have just written his way around it.

Social Security was created as a scam and should be done away with entirely.

Completely wrong. Society is judged by how it takes care of its elderly and disabled. Altruism is strength.

Heh, that would be funny. I can imagine Lee's dialogue turning upside down what the art is showing.

He should have done more Iron Man. Him writing Hal in Green Lantern would have been something special with him being a space cop and all.

No, literally Social Security was made so that you'd have to pay into it as soon as you start working, and you'd get a very small fraction of that money back later if you lived long enough. The age you'd get your money back was deliberately set to only a few years within the average life expectancy of the time. There would be a 50/50 chance you'd never see that money again, except for the fact that women outlived men and most weren't working anyway.

The scam is simply: you lend the government money, then you die before they have to pay you back.

Iron Man is an Objectivist superhero movie, change my mind.

An objectivist would have felt no guilt about terrorist using his weapons and would have kept selling weapons.

I disagree.

This is wrong. Collecting Social Security has helped millions of elderly and disabled to lead more comfortable and dignified lives instead of starving or freezing to death. My mother was on it for ten years and was damned glad to get it.

Even when it was first implemented, even if fewer people lived to collect, life was sure improved for them.

It's not a scam in any useful definition of the word. Conservatives hate Social Security because they have zero compassion for the unfortunates and because they want to cut services to avoid paying taxes. If you're heartless, you're heartless and probably won't change.

An objectivist wouldn't be selling weapons to the government in the first place.

From THE FLY around 1983, an example of Ditko's dialogue being influenced by Rand,. "I don't need human contact or help, and I certainly won't give you any/ We all live and die alone.":

Just curious, why not? What would the objection be if he got a fair price for his work?

The average American life expectancy is 78-odd years at this point. If you retire at 65, that's thirteen years of badkly-needed income to help with any pension or savings you might have, It's been a Godsend for millions of people.
