CASTLEVANIA IS NOT AN ANIME
BOONDOCKS IS NOT AN ANIME
AVATAR IS NOT AN ANIME
SAMURAI JACK IS NOT AN ANIME
ALL ANIME ARE CARTOONS
NOT ALL CARTOONS ARE ANIME (unless you're in Japan)
IF ITS WESTERN ITS NOT ANIME
We did used to call animation from Japan, Japanimation, but it didn't roll off the tongue as well as anime.
thank god for weebs with disposable cash.
Honestly good
Even if we start off with the pusedo-anime thing that's happening now that will eventually turn to projects like Primal which have an American flair to them and have our own form of adult animation that isn't just trying to hone in on what Japan does
This can only be a good thing to see the medium develop from beyond the Disney and Hanna Barbera-esque kid fare that has plagued the medium for almost its entire existence
Hopefully this mean we get more action and drama orientated stuff and less adult "humor" seth macfarlane shit.
>We did used to call animation from Japan, Japanimation, but it didn't roll off the tongue as well as anime.
And thank god for that. Fuck that shit.
I'm just glad "Adult Animation" in America that isn't just raunchy late-night comedy schlock is gaining momentum. I haven't watched "Seis Manos", and I don't know if I'd even specifically like that one, but I do like to see more action cartoons for adults being made in the wake of Castlevania's success.
It sounds better but I hate the argument it spawned. You get debates about western cartoons like ATLA, if they're anime, because they resemble animation in Japan.
>Primal
My problem with calling any western action series "anime" regardless of what inspiration they took is probably because I feel like if we go that route, we'd have certain things be built to fulfill that "anime" requirement
Like artstyle for example
Primal doesn't look like generic anime and that's fucking great
It's Genndy's distinct style and if it was "animefied" and was pushed by execs to appeal to weebs more, you'd get shit like Spear being just a generic anime hunk
Take away Genndy's style and his direction and you lose its appeal
And yes I know anime comes in varying styles that stray pass the generic weebshit you normally see but do you seriously think big wigs know that?
I know this all sounds autistic and this next point even moreso but I think calling things "anime" is just a way for marketers to avoid calling something a "cartoon" as if its a dirty, childish word when in reality there's nothing wrong with it
It is what it is
Anime are cartoons
when was the last serious adult cartoon boom again?
>"Adult" animation
>it's as childish as regular animation but with more naughty words
Adult animation is less sophisticated than children's literature from 60 years ago.
>The industry is taking us seriously now guys, we have an edgy cartoon based on a Japanese video game now that people pretend is an anime
You fuckers are just setting yourself up for disappointment
Adult animation is still just kids animation, but the characters say fuck once in a while
Yeah I don't watch modern cartoons (this includes anime) anymore
I just stick to stuff that came before my time or stuff I just missed in general
Recently binged watched Gargoyles Season 1 to 2 and it was pretty good
Need to finish up Trigun
its going back to that dirty comedy schlock when the sustainability problems hit. enough adult cartoons are just cashing in on a temporary anime renaissance in the west
That's fair. I'd argue anime is doing fine as it ever was but I won't force you to watch, and frankly I don't blame you for keeping an eye on the past.
I watched Gargoyles not long ago and I was amazed how much better it was than virtually everything else that's being made now with less resources.
What went wrong, really? Why is there less quality content these days?
>anime
>adult animation
I also enjoy watching old, vintage short films shown in old film festivals along with obscure foreign stuff
I honestly kind of feel like a hypocrite for sticking to old stuff more than new considering I'm pretty vocally against lazily rehashing nostalgia among my peers but my reasons for watching stuff that's already over are
1. The series is complete, no waiting for new content
2.I can quit on my own terms after looking up at what point is generally considered to be the moment where quality declines. Saves me from disappointment
2. No active fanbase means no cancerous fanbase (no seriously, I have a Black Manta tier irrational hatred for the modern day animation community from the e-celebs to the specific fanbases)
Though, I will admit the appeal of discussion and speculation for a show is lost for obvious reasons
We can dozens upon dozens of action, drama related cartoons with solid writing, development, etc and we'd still have a vast vocal amount of people claiming western animation is dead in the water and has nowhere to go because TTG-esque comedy shows still exist
Prove me wrong
*can have
your not wrong but the meme frog doesn't help your case any, granted the same people who think everything's a ttg clone probably couldn't be assed or are completely unwilling to look at animation festivals or even student works, at some point people just don't care too look at what isn't directly drip fed to them.
can't wait for the he-man anime
No shit, you can't please everyone. On Yas Forums, western animation is treated like sections. When people on this site say Western animation, they really just mean US animation. French animation for example, gets lumped into it's own category, a category that some anons think is fine because the French are more lewd about things.
I know Pan's a loser faggot but he was right about people who say animation is deader than ever because of shit like Thundercats Roar are completely unaware of all the other new shows popping up
Compared to the early 2010's, this is a fucking god send
I know Primal's story is gonna have an actual ending unlike Sym Bionic Titan
I don't have to worry about Primal getting the axe too soon
Also, is Seis Manos as good as Pan keeps saying it is?
This mean Castlevania got renewed for another season or are we still stewing over a series of unresolved cliffhangers?
You're wrong because those don't actually exist and thus your theoretical situation has no merit.
Like it or not, mainstream "western" animation is dictated by the perceived taste of North America with the US and Canada being the bulk of the content made representing "western" animation. And most of the content both make are designed to appeal to children, with the bulk of that being comedies
This. Castlevania and Big Mouth are trash compared to something like The Last Unicorn. Castlevania especially, for just being a purile adaptation of the source material that adds nothing to it.
i've heard good things from the threads we have had here but i haven't watched it myself yet, i'm still finishing up some re-watches of tmnt 03 and starting mib animated / future is wild.
nah we get proof that those kinds of people exist on a daily basis, all they see is the stereotype laid out before them and are completely unwilling or wholly ignorant about it but will gladly regurgitate memes at the top of there lungs demanding everything they say be taken as divine law.
"Calarts" boogeyman is to western animation what capeshit is to western comics
On surface, its basically the only thing it has
Once you actually put the effort (or in this case not be lazy and actually strive to find worthwhile content) you can find something of genuine quality that sadly gets overshadowed by the new outragefaggotry drama of the week
>Fastest growing
If you have one show in 2019 and two in 2020, you just doubled your size!
exactly my point, sadly some people will never attempt to branch out to discover or take chances and too them the only thing that does is exist is the stereotype they have built, frankly lesser known animated works need better distribution outside of the animation festival crowd, but that's always been an issue. and i don't imagine that will change within the next decade.
It truly never ceases to amaze me how "cartoon" faggots jump at the slightest hint of the medium being "taken seriously" regardless of how minimal it is or how shit it is,
SUfags have been yelling up and down about how great Future is, while showing off superficial qualities like "see it's talking about PTSD and deconstructing the earlier seasons, that means the writing is great now!" without understanding how poorly it was executed or how it ruins the actual whole of the show they claim to understand and care about , or how this thread seems to think because Castlevania is anything other than a subpar video game adaptation that is literally no different from actual video game anime adaptations like Devil May Cry in terms of quality.
Primal at least to its credit is a well done show for what it's doing, which frankly is just
caveman Conan. But to expect it to lead to bigger and better things is just wishful thinking at best.
Sane with "games r art" fags. Everything with sad lesbians is treated with the same reverence as Handel's Messiah.
I love cartoons
I love animation as an art no matter the country
But I don't fucking need validation from anyone else
I don't need the mark of approval from some old fart in the Oscars when he hasn't even watched most of the animated films nominated
Why should I care about the opinions of these people?
Does it make the show better for me?
Does it enhance my experience?
Does it make me more comfortable in liking i?
Fuck that bullshit
Animation has nothing to prove
"Those people" exist, because they aren't proven wrong. Western has very little action and virtually no dramas that aren't sprinkled with comedy, and even less not aimed at children.
People should have to dig on YT for artsy shorts, and nobody besides animation nerds are going to give any non-mainstream animated movie a chance, least of a all one that isn't CGI. You can cry normies being lazy or whatever, and claim yourself superior because you know about cartoons from France. But at the end of the that isn't going to help the reputation of western animation is it?
*Same with
If anything, its gonna get worse because you have certain YouTubers making money off of outrage bullshit about the "calarts" bogeyman and even worse, connecting with online culture war bullshit
These douchebags have a financial click bait motivation for this crap to continue
They want this crap to continue
They'll make sure this crap continues and they'll set up the idea that nothing is good (unless its something they've made themselves) because they'll earn as much attention and sweet ad revenue from it
>Castlevania and Big Mouth are trash compared to something like The Last Unicorn.
That's not saying much, given almost very few western cartoons or anime in general explore as deep of themes as the Last Unicorn.
Still waiting for official word from Netflix.
Unironically based. It's time we got action and drama.
what actually is the overall qualifier for "adult animation" because I've never considered anime as "adult" and frenchshit for that mattter.
anime writing is most of time shallow and overlooked by the animation or fanservice, I don't want the adult animation scene to become the same thing.
>something they made
Or anime
if people aren't willing to put forth the effort but want to spout retard shit at some point, especially here, you figure out that telling them about good shit ultimately lowers the level of discourse you could have at the rarity it does pop up, why should i want the retard who does nothing but spam wojacks on Yas Forums to come watch the yearly student projects or art house festival showings?
they thrive off it and retards it kind stuff there wallets because it lines up with what they already think, i have nothing but destain for people who refuse to look for themselves but will believe the opinions of some stain of a human being who only cares about clicks received.
>because I've never considered anime as "adult"
Probably because most of the anime you watch (or that's even released here in the west) is shounen, which is literally made for little kids.
Anime is a big term that goes from akira to lucky star. It had a use when japan was creating an empire, but nowadays is just a buzzword with no meaning. Adult animations vs kiddy shit is a better way to go even for japanese media.
That's my point. If we actually live in a golden age of creativity where advertisers no longer dictate everything, why are we only making trash?
The average watcher shouldn't have to dig that hard. Sorry to bring up live action, but you don't have to look hard to find products with a wide variety of tones and genres.
I guarantee the average person know and cares more about fucking Parasite now, than they do about Klaus.
Then my issue is that calling every piece of adult animation "anime" is just gonna make it harder for adult animation that doesn't succumb to what the general public/corporate heads think anime is
They don't know anime has been varied
They don't know anime can be in many shapes or forms
If you have to be "anime" to be called an actual, respectable work of adult animation
What does that make Moral Orel's Season 2 to 3?
Or Primal?
Or The Maxx's brief animated series?
Is it so wrong to have a decent adult cartoon that isn't anything like the shit airing on Adult Swim or on Fox primetime? Aren't you guys tired of the ironic nihilistic crap?
You're talking as if the adult cartoons airing now are any better. Why are you so against something that is different?
>any further use for Yas Forums
I'll keep watching anime because they still draw cute girls instead of bulldykes and black trannies like "adult" cartoons seem content to do.
It doesn't help that the west is so pussified that kid's shows in Japan end up airing on adult-oriented blocks at midnight here in the west.
the average watcher makes no effort period, and neither does the academy. there perfectly content repeating that western animation is dead because they don't like what disney channel is producing, there go that's all the entire medium has produced, fuck these people.
Not him
Like I said before
Their validation means nothing
Them being uniformed idiots regurgitating clickbait making discussion regarding animation worse is another story though
Have you considered the uncomfortable possibility that even without advertisers dictating everything, trash is still what people generally want?
There's nothing wrong with wanting it, but you shouldn't be expecting it and expect it with such low bar standards.
Unless there's a western animated drama that becomes Simpsons huge, it's downright naive to expect anything less than another Family Guy/South Park/flavor of the month clone
Can't prove a negative, user.
>granted the same people who think everything's a ttg clone probably couldn't be assed or are completely unwilling to look at animation festivals or even student works
No one here gives a shit about those animation festivals and I highly doubt you do too.
i always catch the yearly threads and follow and check on the works of independent and hobby animators regularly, you being a pleb does not speak for the entire animation community.
Wake me up when "adult animation" stops being equivalent to edgeshit. Can't wait for HGS to finally come out to show how it's done.
>But I don't fucking need validation from anyone else
Except from us, right?
So? The main problem is SHIT writing. Bojack Horseman has shit writing for example. Another problem? Obvious Leftist propaganda concepts in media.
