Can someone explain to me how Lars is a “bad” drummer? I don’t understand why people say this
He's generally unremarkable but what really doomed in him the eyes of audiences was a combination of that whole Napster fiasco, his reputation for being a general dickhead to fans and the drum sound on St. Anger.
I'm not a Metallica fan or much of a meal fan at all, so maybe I'm missing the point, but when I listened to Lulu the only part I thought was bad was the drums. Both the sound of them, and the way they were played. It was just tasteless in every conceivable way, horrible horrible thrashing away.
It's a meme that has been blown out of proportion to such a degree that most of the people perpetuating it probably couldn't name ten Metallica songs if you pop quizzed them. Lars was a serviceable drummer in Metallica's heyday of relevant albums, live over the years he has slipped....it's pretty clear that he just doesn't practice and has no interest in playing songs he's played before, so yeah there exist many videos of Old Man Lars fucking up parts or playing off tempo and this and that, that is all true, but it has been blown out of proportion to everybody and their mother claiming "LARS SUCKS LOLOL ALL TIME WORST METAL DRUMMER" rather than people who obsessively watch all Metallica's live shows and pay attention to every beat commenting "Lars fell off"
he's changing the tempo while playing, hammet is equally bad though, he plays out of key in plenty of songs live.
I mean changing the tempo a little between verses/chorus etc is ok, but he speeds up slows down during the bars.
what is overdubs?
the fuck is his bass drum (s) even doing in this song?
For me, it's the kick on Justice for All
His recorded early days stuff was just serviceable nothing special but not bad by any means. But he has some weird cult of personality where people unironically think he's the best.
For the past 20+ years he's been terrible live... he's constantly fucking up the tempo, going off beat, messing up fills or just not doing them at all, etc. I think he's just out of practice and coasting. If he actually tried he could be fine again.
I'm sure all their newer albums are quantized to shit or are just sampled drums.
How do the others put up with such laziness?
$
Lars owns the name "Metallica" and all associated copyrights. He is smarter than 99% of drummers, so they hate him.
apparently this
Metallica as a whole was Lars' idea, the band, the branding, the logo, the merch....it all came from Lars.
Based Lars. Haters gonna hate.
It's usually in reference to his live playing. In his prime and in the studio Lars was a decent thrash drummer. He had the endurance and intensity to play as the genre demanded, but he was never very remarkable. As time went on he got sloppier and sloppier when playing live. There's been moments where he's been passable, like right after Death Magnetic came out because Metallica had just spent a ton of time practicing and rehearsing in the studio. Overall though he's just a drummer who was already fairly run of the mill that doesn't practice as much as he should. It does get exaggerated though because he's pretty hated, and because Metallica records way more of their shows than any other thrash metal band. If Kreator's drummer wasn't all that good anymore now, most people would never know.
It's not that he was a bad drummer, prior to Black Album he couldn't play drums at all, Bob Rock forced him to learn.
What you don't understand is that Metallica should quit. They're past their use by date. Just a shell of what they were. If anybody likes Death Magnetic or Hardwired they're fucking retarded. Don't care who you are it's a fact.
to be honest, i'd have phoned that shit in, too. you'd have to be a chimpanzee to still derive any joy drumming the same fucking rock beats for 30 years.
>Metallica
Was his friend's idea for a magazine. One of a list of names. Great artists steal!
this is when he's old tho? that doesn't count. I've seen people say he sucks since black album era and say he really sucked on st anger.
Or you could just you know, be creative constantly improve
prog drumming's a different beast. it has similar qualities to jazz drumming that allow for more creative expression. slower tempo, greater time signature variety, instruments dropping in and out to create space, etc.
>mfw Metallica never evolved into a prog metal band
>ywn listen to a 24 minute rendition of The Call of Cthulu
On the recordings he plays boring basic high school freshman tier drum beats.
Live he can't keep tempo and fucks up even the simplest things
Literally listen to the drummers in any other thrash metal band and compare them. Throw on Slayer followed by Metallica. Both of these bands are considered part of the big 4.
>you'd have to be a chimpanzee to still derive any joy drumming the same fucking rock beats for 30 years
I mean hell, the Rolling Stones have been playing the same scripted concert every night since they reunited in the late 80s.
Justice was kind of going in that direction but they didn't really have the chops to pull it off.
