Anyone here collect CDs? I've been meaning to start a collection of physical music, but vinyl is expensive as all fuck and so are turntables.
What are the pros and cons of CD vs Vinyl on a purely collecting standpoint? Also what should I be looking for in a CD player/sound system setup?
CD Collecting
I’ve been collecting on and off for like ten years. Pros are that CDs are really cheap rn. They haven’t made a comeback so the demand isn’t high. New CDs are also $15 ish compared to $40 ish new vinyl. CDs are great if you like music from the 90s and 00s because CDs were the main distribution method for those time periods. You might have some trouble finding record stores that have good CD selections, but they’re out there. I don’t shop online so I have no knowledge about that. CDs are also nice for getting high quality audio tips on your computer, assuming you have a disc drive.
CD cases are smaller
CDs don’t degrade every time you play it
I just play mine out of an old aiwa boombox. My dad has a real nice hifi system, I should probably make some use of it since he doesn’t.
save your money and space. it's not worth it.
vinyls are overrated. While I do feel pride in my collection its mostly because a lot of them are just incredibly lucky finds that I paid next to nothing for, I hardly listen to them.
There aren't any cons to cd collecting that I can think of. They are so cheap and its actually very easy to find great albums just in a thorough sift through the CD section at any thrift store. You'll be surprised at what you find. I once found Melody's Echo Chamber in a shitty small town thrift for only 50c. Plus you can almost always find any album you're looking to add to your collection on ebay for a good price. I bought most of my Aphex Twin cd collection on ebay from local sellers, I just make offers thats a few bucks below their listing and they'll usually take the offer, especially right now during corona shit, they're probably just glad to get it off their hands.
Also, just buying interesting looking CDs from junk stores for 50c a pop has introduced me to a lot of music I wouldn't otherwise have known about. It's something my dad has done as well for years, a lot of the cds he would buy but didn't like he'd send to me. I discovered most of my favourite musicians this way, actually.
I have a 5-disc cd player but I heard they took those off the market a few years back, which is a shame because I love mine. Try looking on a local buy/swap/sell page for a CD system, something with detached speakers, anything from the early 2000s, Sony, Panasonic, whatever.
CDs are good because they haven't really become trendy collectors items at all so its not too hard to find great albums for cheap. Also I always like to buy CDs off bands to support them. It doesn't mean much to me if I buy a digital album, I prefer the tangibility of seeing and holding and owning their work.
Having grown up with vinyl, then CD, then DJ'd using vinyl.. CD is better. Sound quality is the best out of of any media to date. Vinyl looks cool hanging on your wall I guess.
Vinyls are fun and gimmicky to collect but if you actually want to go in on physical music then CDs are superior. The only reason to get vinyl is if there is some exclusive content like different mixing or extra b sides. Even then you can find flac rips of those. Apparantly cassetes are making a comeback but i don't know why those are being collected besides the "retro" look of using a casette player.
I love CDs, but cassettes/tapes are better.
I mostly just want to collect CDs since they are cool to display, and it supports the artists more than streaming, which is what I'm doing right now. Thanks for all the good tips /moo/tants :)
I collect cassettes!
They're quite cheap to make, so smaller bands tend to make cassette releases which I like to buy.
I am just sentimental over my walkman, I used to go to sleep listening to the fuzzy slightly distorted sound of Loreena McKennit on cassette when I was a kid. I relived the experience when I was 14 and started listening to cassettes again, so I've been collecting since then. Unfortunately, it's still actually hard to find good albums on cassette, the good time to buy them probably would have been mid to late 2000s and early EARLY 2010s but unfortunately they are having a comeback. Wonder what's gonna be the push to make them as popular as vinyl again.
They definitely are not superior sound quality, they're just nice to have.
I'd say it's CDs > Vinyls > Cassettes
but for collecting purposes I'd go Cassettes > Vinyls > CDs.
@prismadoll
Why would you put CDs at the bottom for collecting? Casettes can easily be damaged by heat and static. That makes them more fragile and harder to maintain a collection. I think it would be more Vinyl>CD>Casette for collecting.
If you get blank cassettes (there are tons) and a cassette recorder you can make your own tapes
I recently got into vinyl collecting because a lot of great underground techno and oldschool psytrance is really only avaliable on vinyl. Also i like jamming with samples and theres just something about just letting a vinyl record into ableton and then slicing that clip to a midi that feels very idk organic to me.
That said i plan to keep my collection on the functional side. So mostly freshly pressed cheaper vinyl and discogs finds i actually play. + I hate the feeling of cds.
I meant for collection purposes, so purely the pride of owning an album based on its format in that order. I like owning albums on cassette, they make me feel happy, and the excitement of finding a treasure on cassette makes it a little goldmine for my serotonin.
But where I put my money is a different story, I'll build my collection from CDs before Vinyl or cassette.
why
The plural of vinyl is vinyl
Tapes.. What a pox on the music industry. Terrible sound, short life span, having to rewind or fast forward to get to that one song. I hope they never return.
ok cunt
I think I get it. Plus they have a small form factor so you can display a lot of them. But vinyls can come in different colours and materials. It makes the audio shit but it's got a charm.
I love tapes . The best music wa produced when tapes were still used by the populace
CDs instead degrade even if you don't play it. Disc rot is a serious issue for a lot of discs thanks to poor quality control, and even a completely sealed CD can suffer from this problem. Anyone buying CDs is a chump simply because it's a larger roll of the dice if you're gonna get one that'll last.
Just trying to help you from looking like a dumbass
We’ll all be long dead before that happens. Stop forcing this meme.
i find coloured vinyls very gimmicky. Looks good for a wanky IG story on your pretty vintage record player but other than that, once it goes back in the sleeve, what difference does it make??
I collect cassettes and VHS, which a lot of people would find crazy because they take up so much space, but to me they are as much a form of decoration as they are a collection. My CDs look ugly on the shelf because the majority of it is just a bit of plastic and the half a centimetre you've got to show anything of the cd, and that's only visible when you're standing in front of it looking for something to play. Also the design is limited on such a small amount of space. Cassettes you can see the title, the graphic, the colour of the cassette or pattern on the spine alone. I'm a big fan of cassette art too because instead of your usual square, the art has to be adapted to a rectangle, so you get different art for the same album.

I have a book of about 50 CDs I play in my car, some I purchased but some I burned.
Problem for me is scratches i’m not sure what I can do about that but yeah they are scratched
when i collected cds about 15 years ago i would buy them all used off amazon. you could get a lot of albums for like 1 cent and pay shipping/handling which was around 2.99. dont know if they are still that cheap on amazon but itd be worth checking and most were in really good condition. i eventually sold my 400 cds to buy liquor sadly. but it overall didnt cost too much since i only bought new releases brand new.

this is so sad.
Thanks for depressing me.
Forcing what memes? There are a bunch of old saturn or sega cd games which are unplayable due to disc rot for example. This isn't a matter of discs rotting in decades, but rather years due to incredibly poor quality control.
Other forms of physical media will generally last longer provided you take good care of them. No level of care can save a bad disc from disc rot.
Im an actual collector of the earliest CD pressings I can find. The CDs I collect date from the early 80s from West Germany and Japan none of those have ever had disc rot.
Video game discs aren't the same as cds. It matters where they were pressed. Certain discs from the early 90s from England suffer from various problems because they were poorly manufactured. Certain Mastered by Nimbus discs are problematic.
>vinyls
The plural of vinyl is vinyl, you braindead faggots.
I get that actually. You can have them in colours and they'll sound the same even if it isn't as good quality as CD and Vinyl. Casettes don't last nearly as long as CD or Vinyl even in proper conditions so I wouldn't collect them but I now understand why others do.
