Same with me except I'm a bit older than you. Got into music when I was 17, I'm 24 now.

It chews me up inside because I remember being 17 and discovering that I loved music. And I remember thinking back then, "I wish I could be a musician. I wish I could play guitar or piano or make hip hop beats or do anything musical, because I love this shit so much. But it's too late for me now."

Now, 7 years later, I realize that if I had just started guitar or any instrument back then, then I would have 7 years of experience by now. I could have been writing, recording and releasing music at this age if I had just started back then. I don't know why I ever thought 17 was too old to learn. I guess I just got disheartened by reading the bios of all the musicians I was getting into back then and they would say "he learned the guitar at 10 years old", "he wrote his first song at 11"...

Now at 24 I realize that I probably really am too old now. Another 7 years and I will be 31. I just don't have that kind of time. The whole shit is fucked. If my parents had just introduced me to music at a normal age then I wouldn't be so delayed, and then maybe I would have had a chance.

I had to go through my edgy phase from 16 to 18 instead of 13 to 15. I feel like I missed out on my teenage angst phase which is fundamental to your musical development. I only started listening to good music at 18 when my teenage years were all but over.

I used to play strategy games and read alot about history. I went to reenactments. basically, I was a nerd. I did listen to music but it was from like 1700s and 1800s war regiment marches, etc.

What's worse is wanting to learn an instrument at 14, but being too poor to get the gear or the lessons yourself and your parents being too lazy and disinterested to help you. Since then I've been forced to watch myself slowly reach the age where it's too late to learn and actually get good.
Now at 26 I have essentially no talent and my parents are surprised that the only real hobby I have is playing video games.
