Isn't music theory supposed to help you to write great music? How do you explain these guys?
Isn't music theory supposed to help you to write great music? How do you explain these guys?
it's the other way round. people write good music, then other people describe what composers did in theory terms.
you can use that knowledge however you want.
How many times do we have to have this thread
bump
Theory knowledge =/= good taste
Jacob Collier and ESPECIALLY Adam Neely have created some of the best music to my very experienced ears in the past few years. I'm 52 by the way, so I have listened to a lot of music in my time. I am blown away by Neely. He is just divine.
Okay boomer
Theory can't compensate for taste and application of said theory
They're all style. Collier especially is only trying to show off most of the time

>Debussy

op, good music unironically only comes from the heart. you can't write music by the numbers like those dudes do. this st vincent quote
In retrospect, Clark said, "I think that with music school and art school, or school in any form, there has to be some system of grading and measurement. The things they can teach you are quantifiable. While all that is good and has its place, at some point you have to learn all you can and then forget everything that you learned in order to actually start making music."[16]
Jacob's a genius, Adam is an arrogant bitch.

Where am I on this list?
both are corny as hell to anyone with moderate knowledge of theory
Why would I care what that no-talent has to say? The only reason she is where she is , is because of industry connections. Silver spoon jewbitch.
>WAHHH WAHHH I NEVER TRIED AT ALL AND NEVER MADE IT WHYYY AHHH WHHYYYY IF ONLY I COULD'VE DONE SOMETHING
behold this is how people who are too stupid and lazy to learn music theory and bring up Beatles as the reasoning why you don't need music theory every fucking time, cope
stfu tranny
There are three tiers of music:
A complete absense of all sense of order and theory, resulting in retarded bullshit like noise, shitty ambient, sound-recordings, "contemporary" classical, etc.
Completely autistic and rigorous implementation of theory, resulting in mediocre boring work like Neely, a lot of various bebop jazz, progressive rock, and mediocre classical.
A combination of theory and ground-breaking, resulting in the great masterpieces like Ornette Coleman's the shape of jazz to come, Mingus' third stream work, and the work of the great composers.
google it you stupid faggot
to quote my music theory teacher, music theory is descriptive, not prescriptive, despite popular belief. Its actually far behind the music of today, considering how far music has come and how many people brake the “rules” of classical theory even though art has no rules. I mean even blues broke the classical chord progression rules.
She demonstrably has had industry connections and enough money where she could freely pursue her "art" that most working class people could never do
you had me until
>a lot of various bebop jazz, progressive rock and mediocre classical
fpbp. No one seems to understand this.
Damn, missing the point. You stupid dude?
but a lot of great composers used theory to think of new ideas to write their music. It's not like they're unaware of it. Kind of blue for instance was written by Miles Davis with modes in mind

>t. mad because doesn't music theory
>JC and Neely are notable for being able to describe in colorful language theoretical applications in music.
>their content is a meme because of their teaching skills
>the internet is dissolving the traditional format of packaging music with a bow. content creators are expected more and more to present themselves as a human being and artist
>op, good music unironically only comes from the heart
