Crust punk interests me. What are some essentials?

here are some suggestions to help you understand the vibe. there are so many small and shitty crust bands it's best to find a local scene or just discover then on your own. but here are helpful starters

Leftover Crack/choking victim (pop punk meets crust)
Dystopia (edgy and EPIC crusty metal)
Crass (crust vibe though not sound)
Discharge (proto crust sound)
Nausea (trve crust but easy listening)
Amebix (trve crust and challenging at times)
Johnny Hobo (folk punk, crusty lifestyle)
Tragedy (if crust was on the radio it would be this good)

great choices. if you aren't actively involved in the punk scene crust doesn't have a lot to offer. it is a lifestyle and the music is part of the tribal experience.. in many ways the songs are interchangeable folk music. all very similar and the communal experience is the real point. only a few bands create something worth listening to without that context

I love crust. I've been obsessive with punk for a long time, and crust is my favorite subgenre. It's heavy and intense, but also very imaginative - there are literal fantasy elements, and it has a very ecological focus. Its roots in anarcho-punk still shine through, but it crosses over heavily with sludge metal, black metal, melodic death metal, and grindcore.

These are some of my favorites, but note that I do tend toward the newer stuff.

Do Tragedy, Skitsystem, Baptists, and Cop on Fire. Report back.
