do most people dislike blues these days?
whenever i send people delta blues, robert johnson, lightning hopkins, son house etc type shit they say they don't like it, which is odd because they listen to all sorts of music that uses blues tonality.

Yeah, and I'll bet that they're all Rolling Stones, or Led Zepplin fans......
These blues artists aren’t easily accessible. If you haven’t suffered, experienced isolation and feelings that veer into misanthropic territory while also catching a glimpse of some light and hope (however small), then odds are that you won’t like these artists.
The same almost holds for liking black metal as well
>do most people dislike blues these days?
What?
Who the fuck hates blues?
It's dated, but it's still in all of our music.
I've always considered the two to be in the same vein, along with early hip hop.
This except the bigger hurdle is understanding southern (esp black southern) traditions outside of hiphop. People write it off as antiquated hick shit, and both of those adjectives put together will scare off most anyone who's not from the south or hates older musical traditions. That's a lot of people
I think people either got the blues or they don't. My dad played me Muddy Waters when i was 12. I though it was the most badass music I ever heard. But I could neva get any of my friends into it.
one of my friends says the dissonances make him agitated and uncomfortable. like the non-diatonic 'blue note', the tritones in the 7th chords, and the minor pentatonic being played over 'major' 7th chords
people have such shallow appreciation of culture
My bass teacher and I had a long conversation about this. He's an old guy, grew up in Mississippi. Basically he tells me that as time went on and black people were able to move up, they wanted to get away from that poor people music. They didn't want to seem like hicks essentially. It was antiquated and uncomplicated. He told me his parents didn't want him listening to that stuff, because they didn't want other people to think less of them, keep in mind times were different the. Songs about suffering and working on fields soon became unrelatable.
Repetitive and boring. Unconvincing wailing. Only Piedmont blues are good.
>one of my friends says the dissonances make him agitated and uncomfortable.
So people are too soft for blues now?
How pathetic.
Thats sad. Being ashamed of your people’s cultural accomplishments. The delta blues are sort of a trojan horse. Sure the presentation and aesthetic may seem backwards or as some people say, “antiquated”, but the themes are universal.
Just listen to blind willie johnson’s “dark was the night, cold was the ground”. Thats pure expression right there.
all blues music sounds the same because if you take it in too interesting of a direction it becomes a different genre
I think someone like John Fahey is the perfect example of somebody transfiguring the blues from within. You have someone working within the blues idiom and using the instrument most associated with the genre and adding in elements of both classical music and Indian music. Its still the blues on the outside but something inside has changed.
why are you sending blues songs to people?
that's not blues anymore though, like i said. blues dorks call that "American Primitive Guitar" because they can't handle anything that is even a slight deviation from the same boring riffs
I see what you’re saying.
that’s a really interesting point. i think that speaks to the strength of blues as a bedrock for modern music - but you’re right. straightup blues music is often really boring and repetitive to listen to.
The blues makes panties drop.
He doesn’t want to be alone
A feeling all too familiar to those who know the blues
>The same almost holds for liking black metal as well
im a zoomer and i love the blues
I play in a blues band. It's boring, bland, repetitive, etc. Oh, another 12 bar, oh another song about your woman or drinking. The slow ones are the worst. Even when you solo, you cannot leave any color besides an augmented 4th. Occasionally a flat 9 works but only when everyone is in agreement on when that chord is coming. It's just tiring, boring, been DONE TO DEATH.
The only reason I play in it is because boomers like it and it pays the bills and it makes for great bar gigs here in the midwest. I'm much more into southern rock/jam than I am blues. But I'll throw on some Stevie or Albert King from time to time I guess.
Pretty sure blues is like the worst selling genre on Bandcamp behind "world" music lol.
imagine not enjoying your own music. the blues isn't about some faggy modal trite that nobody wants to listen to. go post some "shred" videos on YouTube that 12 year olds with a glarry strat can jack off to and literally nobody will ever listen as actual music. As if mixing major and minor pentatonics in a song can't be interesting anyway or you can't add flair to a 12 bar other than an augmented 4th. The blues is about not having to think too much about the song so you can get right to letting everyone know how much your life fucking sucks. Ruin your life a couple times and maybe you'll start understanding your own fucking gigs lmaoo. Are you the bassist by any chance?
This is a really solid point. In a genealogical sense you could consider the entire family tree of rock and rhythm and blues to be subgenres of blues, but obviously none of these things are ever called blues so what's left to fall under that label is a very simple and narrow range of music.
>Dur NURR der nur
user's gettin' angry
>Dur NURR der nur
Over boring-ass blues
>Dur NURR der nur
and he's gonna keep ragin'
>Dur NURR der nur
'cause that's all he can do
bawhwaawroorraradararhdh duur da roo roo doo doo
stop namedropping scales you don't sound smart
as a european i never listened to blues or jazz or any black music until white artists started incorporating it into their own music. still haven't gotten around to listening to it
>I play bass with boomers because I have no artistic drive and I wish the lead guitarist would entertain me more while I don't contribute anything interesting
This is true. My band considered ourselves a blues band for a while until it became apparent that we were pretty much rock despite taking so much influence from delta blues guys. Blues as a genre is just incredibly narrow.
on the day he was born
>baaa roo da roo roo
user was mad
>baa roo da roo roo
soon dead of an aneurysm
>baa roo nurr doo roo
and we was all real glad
>BAWR rar a rar araraarar do do dooo der roooo
>If you haven’t suffered,
who in this world has suffered? even its just emotionally? A lot of the blues is comparable to country music (they are very rleated) in terms of describing the trials and tribulations of everyday life.
hasnt suffered
A lot of white people like to fetishize the delay blue Man because he's suffering but he can't do anything about it. Makes him seem less threatening than a black person talking about doing shit. This isn't a fair appraisal of black men in blues music, but it's a genuine one that makes white Boomer comfy
bet he listens to daughters tho
