As the title says, amidst this corona virus quarantine I've just started learning bass around two weeks ago and have just about finished my free trial at Scott's Bass Lessons Academy (helped plenty theory wise, what sort of online teaching methods do you experienced bass players recommend? I've heard that just straight up learning popular easy basslines is good to start until you get a good feel for the fingerboard.
I've mainly been practicing a few basslines as well as finger precision/pressure practice and learning basic chord shapes etc.
Learning bass thread, help a brother out
The pinnacle of bass playing to me are jazz bassists.
Able to formulate walking basslines on the fly from chord change to chord change. Not as easy as it sounds either, you can use formula's to make a walking bass line, but seldom do they sound quite right. You have to create a rhythmic motif that fits the song your playing to make them proper.
never use a pick and you'll be fine OP. if you love music and play everyday you will be rippin' in 6-12 months
acquire this book
Jazz bassists and drummers are the top dogs
I'll look into it, thank you a bunch
I've been practicing for an hour or more every day, pretty effective so far
fuck this faggot. i exclusively use a pick and have played hundreds of gigs. slap poppy shit is gay as fuck. even jazzier stuff, simply roll the tone knob down to compensate for pick attack.
1-2 hours everyday is good for your first year or two. then you can start playing in a band (if you want) and really exploring music with 4+ hour jam sessions
no one said anything about slap bass. check OP's pic and learn how to play bass faggot
Try to do a mix of fun stuff and skill acquisition. You gotta play some scales and exercises in order to improve your technique. You also want to play actual music.
Learning bass lines you like is never a bad idea.
yet i keep getting picked up for gigs
and the artistry of your instrument keeps diminishing
This book is excellent. Get through all three parts and you'll be a very good bassist
guitar players shouldn't use picks either. only chads fingerpick
Thank you man
>bass
>artistry
you realize we are the most shit on instrument right
I'll do it first thing tomorrow thank you man
it's because you guys use picks. make bass respected again
why would either of you give these answers in a thread about learning the bass when you both know that telling him to learn both would be the best answer you could give as teacher?
no vst will ever simulate the round, thicc, brappy sound of my fretless with flatwound strings. i m so happy i got it before corona.
evrybody laughs behind ur back. no finger game lmao
True. Derek's right hand is insane. Like it has a mind of its own.
my teach was berklee alum. no picks allowed first year. after that we could use a pick but he thought it was cringe
Step 1: learn guitar
Step 2: already know bass
Bassists only get shit on on the internet, IRL if you're a good bassist everyone is desperate to get you to join their band
Start learning ghost notes and good string muting early. It will make basic stuff sound good and is a good habit to get into.
Obviously learning scales and intervals is essential in order to know exactly what you are playing along to and what notes will sound good, but you will probably pick this up naturally if you have already started in the theory.
They advice about learning walking bass lines was great too. Try looking into 12 bar blues and stuff you can jam along too with basic fret board knowledge. Good luck with the learning.
everyone should learn to use both. there are things you just can't do with one or the other and some of those things are great. i'm a finger player but i use a pick all the time too
Picks on bass sounds better than most slapping desu.
I'd agree that bassists should spend most of their time fingerstyle but really good bassists usually know how to do both. Sometimes it's better to use one--check out the bassline from "Sunday Papers" by Joe Jackson; it would be extremely impractical to play it without a pick.
Not really interested in shitty arguments in pick vs fingerstyle, they produce different sounds either way, not fucking important.
i think I have a learning disability
