Roots is the best Sepultura album. All the earlier stuff has pretty generic thrashy riffing. Roots brought an interesting approach to groove metal which was not only a fresh idea at the time, but the addition of tribal instruments and occasional unconventional guitar bits took that sound to another level. It's the band taking a less is more approach to music instead of wanking out generic thrash riff after riff.

I like Roots, but it probably helps that I first listened to it with low expectations. The tribal drumming certainly helps stop things from feeling like a total drag, which beats out everything I remember about Chaos A.D.
